The Intercounty Baseball League’s Toronto Maple Leafs have signed former Minnesota Twins’ pitching prospect Landon Leach.
The team announced the signing on social media on Tuesday.
Leach (Pickering, Ont.), who will turn 25 on Friday, became the first Canadian selected in the 2017 MLB draft when the Twins chose him in the second round (37th overall). He made 24 appearances (17 starts) in parts of three seasons in the Twins’ organization (2017-18, 2021), advancing as high as Class-A, before signing with the Atlanta Braves.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander posted a 4.55 ERA in 17 appearances, split between Rookie Ball, Low-A and High-A in the Braves’ organization, in 2022.
Prior to the 2023 campaign, Leach signed with the independent Frontier League’s Quebec Capitales but he injured his arm during training camp and was placed on the team’s long-term disabled list and he never pitched in a regular season game for the club.
Before his professional career, Leach honed his skills with the Toronto Mets and Junior National Team.
He wrote about the leadup to the 2017 MLB draft for the Canadian Baseball Network in an article that was published on September 10, 2017.
