WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish have re-signed former Toronto Blue Jays draft pick Mattingly Romanin.
The 5-foot-10 infielder rejoins the Jackfish following a productive 2019 campaign before taking last season off. In his fourth IBL season, the Burlington, Ont., native recorded a .294 batting average with two doubles, a triple, eight RBIs and six stolen bases in 18 games.
After being selected by the Blue Jays in the 39th round of the 2015 MLB draft, Romanin split the 2017 season between the class-A Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League and the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League, collecting 36 hits, 13 doubles, 17 RBIs and two stolen bases in 57 games. He was also part of a championship-winning team in Vancouver.
Romanin graduated from Notre Dame High School in Burlington, Ont., and spent time with the Ontario Terriers before committing to Chicago State University. In his time at the NCAA Division-1 school from 2012 to 2015, he became the team’s all-time leader in hits (224), RBIs (118) and doubles (41), while also earning 2013 All-GWC (Great West Conference) First Team and 2014 All-WAC (Western Athletic Conference) Second Team All-Star honours.
