Elliott: Happy Canada Day, our 19th annual lineup -- Guerrero should play

By Bob Elliott

Canadian Baseball Network

Happy Canada Day.

First, we take you back a few days to exactly how our 19th annual mythical Canada Day roster was put together.

We forget who it was, but some sneaky reporter slid his microphone alongside the door.

“Here is what our numbers say,” said the new head of analytics. “We’re talking load management gentlemen. It is his turn to take the day off.”

Next came a lengthy rundown on statistics -- pre day off and post day off -- and in the midst of the statistical breakdown ... a loud thump could be heard.

Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) won 284 games in his 19-year major league career and is the only Canadian that has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

“HE WILL PLAY!” said Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins. “IT IS CANADA DAY GENTLEMEN! THINK ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND. HE ALREADY MISSED VICTORIA DAY.

“THE HOLIDAY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM NOT PLAYING ON VICTORIA DAY. HE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED BECAUSE THERE WAS A LARGER GATE.”

One by one Canada’s top decision makers entered the Ritz-Carlton and headed to the elevators bound for a conference room on an upper floor.

Two burly security guards manned the door as the baseball brain headed inside to decide who would be on the roster and what the batting order would be.

The dandelions of Canadian baseball journalism saw the procession as some of the best Canuck players stroll through the lobby:

_Hall of Fame candidate Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC), who jumped from 34.1% to 54.6% with one year remaining to get to the required 75% to reach Cooperstown. Walker put up his numbers with the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals.

_ Cardinals 1B coach Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), who had a cup of tea with the Cardinals and is Mr. Canada on the international stage.

_ New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.), who pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, the Cleveland Indians and the Montreal Expos.

_ Former North Delta Blue Jay teammates Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC), an MVP winner with the Minnesota Twins and 17-game winner LHP Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC).

_ RHPs Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC) and former Cy Young award winner Eric Gagne (Magouche, Que.), now a pitching coach in the Texas Rangers organization. Dempster was the anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, including six opening day starting assignments.

Our commissioner Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.), the only Canadian elected to Cooperstown, had help from important Canadian citizens: Pat Gillick, former president of the Philadelphia Phillies and Hall of Fame GM of the Blue Jays, Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Jays, plus former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Before the Blue Jays don their red tops to celebrate Canada Day against the Kansas City Royals Monday afternoon at Rogers Centre, it is time for our Canada Day team.

Our 19th annual team includes major leaguers, minor leaguers and those playing in foreign lands.

When we started this process at the end of June 2001 it was basically a daydream. Commissioner Bud Selig changed all that with the 16-country World Baseball Classic.

We often think back to 1984 when there were only two Canadians in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.) or the last World Baseball Classic was missing seven of its best players.

Our Canada Day lineup is healthy as triple crown winners thanks to doctors Jason Smith, Alan Gross, and Marc Philippon. Manager Ernie Whitt (Clinton Township, Mich. a Windsor suburb) and Greg Hamilton (Ottawa, Ont.) gave the people the news.

Our pool to choose from is up from a year ago: 12 Canucks have appeared in the majors this year, a bump of three from a year ago.

In June, 27 Canadians were selected in the draft, up six from a year ago. And five were chosen in the first 10 rounds, one more than last year, with Ontario Blue Jays OF Dasan Brown (Oakville, Ont.) being the top man as a third rounder. Brown is one of six to sign six-figure signing bonuses.

A total of 58 Canucks have appeared on minor-league rosters this season. In all, 106 have been in the minors (one more from a year ago) including 16 who have triple-A time) and 27 in independent ball.

Langley Blaze alum Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, R.C.) would hit leadoff on the 2019 Canada Day team.

The lineup:

Leading off is left fielder Tyler O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC). It is his fourth start on our Canada Day team. He is at triple-A Memphis as well as spending time at Busch Stadium earlier this season with the Cardinals. He has 12 homers at Memphis and one with the Cardinals.

Batting second is Canada’s highest-paid athlete, Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) of the Cincinnati Reds. Votto used to volunteer to play left field when Justin Morneau and Freddie Freeman were active. The Etobicoke Rangers grad is in his 12th start and 14th appearance.

Making his seventh Canada Day start and hitting third is DH Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves. Freeman was WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont. Freeman wanted to play for Canada in 2013 WBC as a tribute to his late mother. Yet, there was not any room with Morneau and Votto sharing first and DH spots. He made his real live debut in Miami.

Hitting fourth and playing third base is Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Toronto Blue Jays. It is Guerrero’s second start and third time being named to the team. Don’t blame Guerrero for taking days off. It is not his fault that he won’t break Cal Ripken’s record of playing in 2,632 consecutive games.

Batting fifth and playing right field is right fielder Josh Naylor. Naylor came up as a first baseman, but that went out the window when the Padres signed 1B Eric Hosmer to an eight-year deal. He has played 14 games in the outfield, eight in right. This is Naylor’s first starting assignment and third time on the team.

Hitting sixth is catcher Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) who the Blue Jays are paying to play for the Dodgers. Martin played short last year on our team, but this Canada Day he is behind the plate again. This is Martin’s 14th start -- 12th behind the plate -- and his 15th selection to our team.

Playing short and hitting seventh is Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ont.) of the Detroit Tigers system. He has split time this season at triple-A Toledo and double-A Erie. Pinero is an Ontario Blue Jays grad who played for the Virginia Cavileers, reaching the College World Series as a freshman. This is Pinero’s third time on the team and his first start.

At second base and batting eighth is second baseman Charles Leblanc (Laval, Que.) is at double-A Frisco. Leblanc was selected from the Pitt University Panthers in the fourth round in 2016. At Pitt, he won the conference batting title. This is LeBlanc’s first time on the team and his first start.

And batting ninth is centre fielder Dalton Pompey (Mississauga, Ont.). Pompey was injured suffering a concussion when he bumped into the top of his locker during spring training in Dunedin. He is expected to be cleared for game action next month. Pompey is a true centre fielder, who has impressed in brief spurts. This is his sixth time on the team and his fourth start.

On the mound will be James Paxton of Ladner, BC. The New York Yankees lefty will be making his fourth start in his sixth selection. You could argue that RHP Mike Soroka should start and is having the better first half -- and you might win -- but our deep thinkers decided to go with the veteran.

And now Donald S. Cherry (Kingston, Ont. -- Canada’s first capital) will throw out the ceremonial first pitch as we go upstairs for the pre-game introductions with the 28-player WBC roster ...
