We continue our look at the 2020 Blue Jays by examining one of the Jays' veteran roleplayers who filled in in 2020: Caleb Joseph.
Joseph was a seventh-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 2008 draft and debuted in the major leagues at the age of 27 in May of 2014. Known more for his defence than his offence, he played regularly for the Orioles with some time as a backup and his best offensive season was his second year, in 2015, when he hit .234/.299/.394 with 16 doubles, a triple and 11 home runs, playing a career-high 100 games.
A free agent after the 2018 season, he signed with Arizona and played just 20 games in the 2019 season, hitting .211/.250/.263 and was a free agent again, signing with the Blue Jays on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
Joseph played in nine games in the spring and hit just .222/.211/.222 and was assigned to the Alternate Training site when the season began.
Joseph was promoted from the Alternate Training Site in August and played three games for the Blue Jays, going 1-for-8 with a walk, a home run and two RBI before he was sent outright to the minor leagues, making room for the major league debut of Alejandro Kirk.
Joseph was granted free agency at the end of the season and will look to secure a contract, likely somewhere else with the Jays now having four catchers on their 40-man roster.
