Blue Jays from Away

The Toronto Blue Jays' minor league organization went 5-2 again on Thursday as yours truly was in Akron to see the New Hampshire Fisher Cats turn on the gas to score nine runs against the RubberDucks.

Buffalo Bisons 3, Toledo Mud Hens 6

The Buffalo Bisons outhit the Toledo Mud Hens but lost 6-3 to open their series. Michael Saunders (Victoria, B.C.) is getting back into the swing of things. The DH was 3/5 with a double. Rowdy Tellez was perfect, going 3/3 with two walks, a double and three RBI. Danny Jansen also had a good night, going 2/3 with a walk. Teoscar Hernandez was not so successful, taking the Golden Sombrero, striking out four times and walking once.

Luis Santos took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings. Matt Dermody allowed two runs, giving up a two-run home run in the sixth, tossing two innings in total. Chad Girodo allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

Player of the Game: Rowdy Tellez

Roster Notes: Chris Smith was recalled by the Blue Jays and Luis Santos was activated off the temporarily inactive list.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9, Akron RubberDucks 6

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats salvaged a win in their series against the Akron RubberDucks with a 9-6 victory that they barely hung on to. The batters teed off facing Matt Esparza with Lourdes Gurriel (1/5, 3 RBI) hitting a three-run home run in the first inning and Tim Lopes (1/5, 3 RBI) hitting another one in the second. Richard Urena missed the cycle by a triple, going 3/5 with a single, double, and home run. Jonathan Davis was also 3/5 with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored and Harold Ramirez was swinging a hot bat, going 3/4 with a double, a walk and an RBI.

Jonathan Harris was solid through six innings, giving up two runs on a two-run home run among just four hits but he walked three and struck out six to earn the win. Francisco Rios got into trouble, pitching two innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Jose Fernandez came in throwing smoke, hitting 96 mph consistently, but also had trouble finding the strike zone, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk in 1/3 of an inning. Andrew Case (Saint John, N.B.) came into a game that shouldn’t have had a save situation in the first place but came on with one out in the ninth and the bases loaded with the Fisher Cats up by three and threw two pitches, inducing a double play to end the game.

Dunedin Blue Jays, Fort Myers Miracle

Lansing Lugnuts 1, Lake County Captains 7

The Lansing Lugnuts dropped the opener of their series at home against the Lake County Captains 7-1. Facing Brady Aiken, the Lugnuts couldn’t get anything going as he allowed just one hit (a solo home run by Edward Olivares) and walked four in seven innings. Olivares was 2/4 with the home run while Ridge Smith hit a double, going 1/3. Mitch Nay was 1/3 with a walk, as was J.B. Woodman.

Kyle Weatherly allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over three innings and Juliandry Higuera took over for him, giving up another two runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in three innings. Connor Eller tried to finish but gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits over 2 2/3 innings and Andrew Deramo finished the game, allowing a hit to score the two runners he inherited from Eller.

Player of the Game: Edward Olivares

Vancouver Canadians 11, Tri-City Dust Devils 0

The Vancouver Canadians played a stellar game all around, getting a three-hit performance from its pitching staff and scoring 11 times to shut out the Tri-City Dust Devils 11-0. Justin Dillon allowed a hit over two innings, striking out five before Zach Logue took over, giving up a hit and a walk in three innings, striking out three. Chris Hall walked two and gave up a hit but struck out a pair in the sixth and Grayson Huffman walked one in two innings. William Ouellette finished it off, striking out two in the ninth.

David Jacob led the offence with a perfect day, going 4/4 with a walk, a home run, four RBI and two runs. Reggie Pruitt also had a pair of hits, driving in a run and scoring one. Kacy Clemens was 2/5 with a run and Riley Adams was 1/2 with two walks, three RBI and two runs. Logan Warmoth was 1/2 with a double, a walk and two runs before coming out of the game for Deiferson Barreto.

Roster Notes: Samad Taylor was promoted from Bluefield.

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Danville Braves 1

The Bluefield Blue Jays beat the Danville Braves for the second time in a row, finishing with a 6-1 victory. Yorman Rodriguez went deep, going 2/4 with his second home run of the year. Antony Fuentes was 2/4 with an RBI and a run and McGregory Contreras was 1/4 with a double and two RBI.

Turner Larkins was excellent, allowing just two hits and two walks in five innings, striking out two while Jordan Barrett was practically unhittable, striking out eight in four innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk.

Roster Notes: Samad Taylor was promoted to Vancouver.

GCL Blue Jays 5, GCL Yankees East 2

The GCL Blue Jays (27-13) returned the favour to the GCL Yankees East who defeated them on Wednesday. The Blue Jays got the win on Thursday, 5-2. Anderson Nunez started, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts over four innings and Adams Cuevas allowed two hits and two walks, amounting to one run in two innings. Emerson Jimenez continued his promising conversion to pitching with two scoreless innings, striking out three and giving up two hits while Jonathan Cheshire struck out the side, allowing two hits in the ninth.

Dominic Abbadessa had two more hits, continuing the form he showed that won him the GCL Player of the Month award in July. He was 2/4 with two runs. Otto Lopez was 1/2 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and stealing a base and Davis Schneider came in for Luis De Los Santos, going 1/1 with a double and two RBI.

Player of the Game: Anderson Nunez and Dominic Abbadessa

Roster Notes: T.J. Zeuch was sent back to Dunedin.

DSL Blue Jays 5, DSL Orioles 0

The DSL Blue Jays made it a clean sweep for the Jays’ short-season teams by beating the DSL Orioles 5-0. Nathanael Perez had another outstanding outing, going five innings and striking out eight, allowing just four hits. Jhon Victorino gave up one hit and struck out three over two innings while Ronald Magdaniel and Geremy Jimenez each tossed an inning, giving up a hit.

Steward Berroa was 2/3 with a walk, a triple, an RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Rafael Lantigua was 2/4 with an RBI and Victor Figuereo hit his second home run of the year (and the DSL Blue Jays’ second home run of the year), going 1/4 with two RBI. Jose Briceno was 1/3 with a double, an RBI and a run and Kenny Mauricio was 1/3 with a double.
