Blue Jays from Away

On Day 3 of the draft, the Toronto Blue Jays' minor league teams won two out of their five games but one of their youngest prospects had a day to remember down in the Dominican Summer League.

Buffalo Bisons 1, Toledo Mud Hens 4

Rowdy Tellez handled all of the scoring for the Buffalo Bisons as they lost 4-1 to the Toledo Mud Hens.

Tellez went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run while Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Danny Jansen and Dwight Smith Jr. each had a hit. Smith hit a double and added a walk.

Chris Rowley allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings and Murphy Smith walked one and struck out one in the eighth.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Akron RubberDucks 6

The double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats may have come back in the ninth inning to beat the Akron RubberDucks 7-6 but they lost Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Montreal, Que.) who came out of the game in the fourth (after going 2/2) appearing to nurse a leg injury. Bo Bichette was 2-for-4 with two runs, a walk and a stolen base while Cavan Biggio was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run. Patrick Cantwell was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and Harold Ramirez was 1-for-4 with a double. Gunnar Heidt, who pinch ran and played third base for Guerrero Jr., was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Jon Harris struck out seven but he was tagged for five runs on eight hits (including a home run) and one walk over 4 1/3 innings. Danny Young walked two and struck out one in 2 1/3 innings while Zach Jackson allowed a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Andrew Case (Saint John, N.B.) got the win, giving up a solo home run among three hits in the ninth.

Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Charlotte Stone Crabs 3

Yennsy Diaz started for the class-A Advanced Dunedin Blue Jays, giving up three runs in the first two innings but that was all yet enough for the Charlotte Stone Crabs to beat the D-Jays 3-1. Diaz went six innings, allowing only three hits (including a two-run home run in the first inning) and three walks with five strikeouts. Andy Ravel pitched two perfect innings, striking out one to finish the game.

Bradley Jones was 2-for-4 while Nash Knight was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Ivan Castillo hit a sacrifice fly and a single.

Lansing Lugnuts 2, Bowling Green Hot Rods 0

The Lansing Lugnuts tossed a six-hit shutout at the Bowling Green Hot Rods, beating them 2-0.

Colton Laws threw five innings to get the win, giving up three hits and striking out three. Kyle Weatherly threw two innings of one-hit ball, striking out two and Claudio Custodio got his first save, allowing two hits and striking out one in the final two innings.

Chavez Young was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base while Ryan Noda hit a double, going 1-for-3 before coming out of the game late. Norberto Obeso was 1-for-4 with an RBI while Matt Morgan and Reggie Pruitt were each 1-for-3 with a run with Pruitt stealing his 12th base.

DSL Blue Jays 10, DSL D-backs1 11

It was a slugfest in the Dominican Republic as the DSL Blue Jays lost a walk-off to the DSL D-backs1 11-10.

Alexis Carmona allowed the first four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in three innings. Franniel Polanco gave up a run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the next three innings but William Gonzalez couldn't get out of the sixth, giving up four runs on three walks and a hit, retiring only one batter. Eliezer Bello didn't allow a hit but allowed all three inherited runners to score and allowed one run of his own, walking two and striking out one in one inning. Christian Reyes pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Miguel Hiraldo followed up his three-hit game on Tuesday with four more hits including three doubles, taking a walk and driving in four runs with two runs scored. Jose Rivas was 1-for-3 but walked three times and scored three times. Rainer Nunez drove in two, going 1-for-1 with a run.
