Blue Jays from Away

The Blue Jays' minor leaguers didn't score a lot of runs on Sunday but they did win three of four games and a major leaguer working his way back to the big leagues started for the Buffalo Bisons.

Buffalo Bisons 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 10

The triple-A Buffalo Bisons dropped their Sunday matinee against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, losing 10-2.

The excitement for Bisons fans came from the fact that Clay Buchholz was making his first appearance in a Blue Jays uniform (okay, it was a Bisons uniform that looked like the old powder blue Blue Jays uniforms). Buchholz allowed four home runs, totaling five runs (three earned) but those were the only hits he allowed as he didn't walk anyone and struck out five. Corey Copping came on to relieve him and allowed a run on four hits with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings and Danny Young struck out two in a perfect inning and a third but when he came out to start the ninth, he walked the first two batters and was relieved by Zach Jackson who gave up a home run to Cliff Pennington with the two scoring walks charged to Young. Jackson gave up another home run to Mike Ford after getting two outs but finished the game, giving up two runs of his own (and the two inherited runners) in an inning with one strikeout.

Cavan Biggio hit his second home run of the year, going 1/2 with the solo shot and two more walks and Andrew Guillotte had a pair of singles. Eric Sogard was 1/5 with a double and an RBI while Jordan Patterson, Reese McGuire and Roemon Fields were each 1/4. Andy Burns was 1/3 with a walk and a single.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Binghamton Rumble Ponies 1

Yennsy Diaz was dominant for the Fisher Cats in his double-A debut. Diaz faced the minimum, tossing six innings and giving up just one hit and striking out five. Diaz allowed just a single to Barrett Barnes in the second inning but promptly picked him off of first before getting the following batter to strike out to end the inning. Diaz got six fly outs and three ground ball outs. Tayler Saucedo followed with two innings, giving up a run on a solo home run and he added a walk and struck out two. Kirby Snead came on for the save in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced and striking out one.

The Fisher Cat offense got on the board when Joshua Palacios hit a two-run home run, his first double-A dinger. Palacios was 1/3 with the home run and two RBI. Forrest Wall had two hits, going 2/4 and Kevin Smith was 1/3 with a walk and a stolen base. Chad Spanberger drove in the club's third run, going 1/4 with a double and Kacy Clemens was 1/3. Vinny Capra was 1/2 with a double, a walk and two runs.

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Clearwater Threshers 1

The class-A Advanced Dunedin Blue Jays got the most out of their six hits, getting two runs in the first and their pitching staff rode that lead to a 2-1 win over the Clearwater Threshers.

With the Blue Jays moving into their temporary home at Jack Russell Stadium, the pitching staff proved themselves up to the task of holding the Threshers at bay. Justin Dillon threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up just three hits and a walk with five strikeouts, also getting eight outs on the ground and three on fly balls. Kyle Weatherly provided a solid 1 2/3 innings, allowing a hit and two walks but no runs and he struck out two. Dany Jimenez earned the save, giving up a run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings while striking out three.

Cullen Large was 3/4 with a triple and a run and Demi Orimoloye was 1/3 with a walk and an RBI. Christian Williams drove in the other run with a single, going 1/4. Logan Warmoth was 1/4 with a run.

S: Dany Jimenez (1)

Lansing Lugnuts 5, Fort Wayne TinCaps 4

It was a back-and-forth affair as the low-A Lansing Lugnuts walked off with a 5-4 win against the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the bottom of the ninth.

Down 4-3 in the ninth, Alejandro Kirk led off with single and was pinch-run for by Reggie Pruitt. Ryan Gold hit a single that pushed Pruitt to third and a wild pitch got Gold to second. Carlos Belen, the pitcher, intentionally walked Hagen Danner to load the bases and then threw another wild pitch, scoring Pruitt to tie the game. After intentionally walking Nick Podkul to load the bases again, John Aiello was hit by a pitch (and rarely have I seen a batter so excited to be hit by a pitch), scoring Gold and giving the Lugnuts a 5-4 win.

Gold had a pair of singles and the winning run while the earlier scoring was all done via home runs. Hagen Danner hit his second of the year, a solo shot in the seventh inning and Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.) hit a two-run shot, his first of the year, in the eighth. Mc Gregory Contreras was 1/3 with a run and D.J. Neal also had a hit, going 1/3.

Starter Sean Wymer was excellent, throwing six strong innings, scattering seven hits and giving up just one run with one walk and four strikeouts. Marcus Reyes allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout in two innings and Mike Pascoe allowed the TinCaps to go ahead in the ninth, allowing a hit and a walk but he comes away with the win.

W: Mike Pascoe (1-1)
HR: Hagen Danner (2), Otto Lopez (1)

Player of the Game: Sean Wymer
