Blue Jays from Away

The Toronto Blue Jays minor league clubs won two and lost two games with Patrick Murphy making an emphatic statement that he's more than capable of handling double-A hitters.

Buffalo Bisons 7, Gwinnett Stripers (ATL) 2

The double-A Buffalo Bisons rallied behind starter Shawn Morimando, who brought his ERA down to 9.00 with his best start of the season and Andrew Guillotte contributed a ton on offence as the Bisons beat the Gwinnett Stripers 7-2.

Morimando went six innings and gave up just two runs (one earned) with five hits and three walks and striking out seven to pick up his first win of the season. Jordan Romano (Markham, Ont.) also had a strong outing, striking out three in two perfect innings before Kirby Snead finished it off with a scoreless ninth, allowing a hit.

Guillotte went 3/4 with a double, a walk, two RBI, a run and a stolen base for an outstanding game while Andy Burns was 2/4 with a run and was hit by a pitch. Jonathan Davis hit his fourth home run of the season, adding three walks, two RBI and two runs, pushing his season OPS to 1.126. Cavan Biggio also carries an OPS over 1.000 (1.042) with a 1/4 game, hitting a double, taking a walk and driving in a run. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was 1/5 with an RBI and Patrick Cantwell was 1/4 with a walk and a run. Roemon Fields was on base four times, going 1/2 with three walks and a run. Anthony Alford was hit by a pitch once, going 0/5 with a run and Jordan Patterson was 0/3 but was hit by a pitch twice.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 11, Portland Sea Dogs (BOS) 1

The double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats finally got a win against the Portland Sea Dogs, beating them with the bats and Patrick Murphy's right arm, winning 11-1.

Murphy finally got his first win of the season, giving up just one hit and one walk, showing the kind of dominating stuff that I saw in spring training as he struck out seven and got 10 outs on the ground in seven innings. Murphy took a no-hitter into the seventh, saying that he was able to slow down his delivery. It was also reported that Murphy was able to hold a velocity of 96-97 mph into the later innings. Jackson McClelland allowed an unearned run in 2/3 of an inning, allowing a pair of hits and striking out one before Danny Young stranded a pair of runners, then finished the game, walking one and striking out three in 1 1/3 innings.

The bats rapped out 12 hits including two home runs including Vinny Capra's first of the season as he went 2/4 with the dinger and two RBI, walking once. Nash Knight was 3/4 with a walk, a home run, two RBI and a run and Brock Lundquist continues to be hot, going 2/4 with a walk, a double, three RBI and a run. Riley Adams was 1/4 with a walk, an RBI, two runs and a double. Forrest Wall was 2/5 with a triple, a stolen base and two runs while Alberto Mineo was 1/4 with two walks and a run. Chad Spanberger was 1/4 with a walk, two RBI, a run and a sac fly.

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Clearwater Threshers (PHI) 5

The class-A Advanced Dunedin Blue Jays opened up their homestand with a 5-2 loss over the Clearwater Threshers.

Starting pitcher Maximo Castillo had a strong game that was wasted by the Blue Jays' offence as he allowed four hits and four walks but no runs with three strikeouts in five innings. Kyle Weatherly allowed two runs to take the loss, giving up three hits and a walk with a strikeout in the sixth. Connor Law allowed three more runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings and William Ouellette walked one, stranding a runner in 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout.

The Blue Jays had just four hits with Luis De Los Santos going 1/3 and hitting his first home run of the year in the eighth inning. Alejandro Kirk hit his fourth double in as many games in Advanced-A, going 1/4 with an RBI and picking off a runner and Cal Stevenson and Christian Williams were both 1/3 with a walk while Stevenson threw out two runners on the bases from the outfield.

Lansing Lugnuts 1, Kane County Cougars (ARI) 3

The low-A Lansing Lugnuts moved on to their next stop on the road as they took on the Kane County Cougars, losing 3-1.

Troy Miller made his second start for the Lugnuts, going five innings and giving up three runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts, taking the loss. Cre Finfrock (pronounced "Cree") tossed two stellar innings in relief, striking out five and Jackson Rees struck out another two batters in the eighth.

The Lugnuts struck out as a team 15 times over the course of the game, despite out-hitting the Cougars. Ryan Gold and Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.) were each 3/4 with Gold smacking a double and both players stealing a base (and Lopez was also caught stealing). Reggie Pruitt was 1/4 and Nick Podkul was 1/3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base.
