Blue Jays from Away

Buffalo Bisons 5, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders (NYY) 2

The Buffalo Bisons' (12-7) threw their bullpen out on the mound to take on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders, beating them 5-2.

Starting was Connor Overton who continued his strong year, throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Tayler Saucedo saw the first blemishes on his ERA, allowing two runs on four hits over two innings to bloat his ERA up to 1.46 while Casey Lawrence made his Buffalo return, throwing a scoreless inning. Jackson McClelland also got into the scoreless at, allowing a hit and a walk and striking out one in his inning while Jeremy Beasley threw a scoreless frame in his return from the majors, walking two and allowing a hit but striking out two. Bryan Baker finished it, allowing a hit and striking out one to earn the save and keep his ERA at 0.00.

Cullen Large led the offence, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run but was picked off and caught stealing. Juan Graterol was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Richard Urena was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, an RBI and a run. Forrest Wall was 1-for-5 with a stolen base and Christian Colon was 1-for-4. Kevin Smith provided some pop, going 1-for-4 with a solo home run and Logan Warmoth was 1-for-4 with a run.

Roster Notes: Curtis Taylor (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) was sent down to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Somerset Patriots (NYY) 2

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7-12) squandered another strong pitching performance in a 2-1 loss to the Somerset Patriots.

Kyle Johnston added another strong double-A start to his resume, giving up just one hit and three walks over five innings, striking out four. Mike Ellenbest struck out one in the sixth and Connor Law struck out a pair in the seventh. James Dykstra took the loss, letting the Patriots score twice on three hits and a walk despite striking out the side in the eighth.

Top prospect Austin Martin had the trifecta, getting three hits for the Fisher Cats and scoring once while Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.) pushed his batting average to .368 by going 2-for-4. LJ Talley was 1-for-4 and Vinny Capra was 1-for-3 and was caught stealing. The club's only run came from a Gabriel Moreno sac fly, driving in Martin.

Roster Notes: Simeon Woods Richardson was placed on the temporarily inactive list while Mike Ellenbest and Cre Finfrock were activated from the injured list. Troy Miller was assigned to New Hampshire from Vancouver and Elvis Luciano was placed on the injured list. Sam Ryan was sent down to Vancouver and Curtis Taylor was assigned to New Hampshire from Buffalo.

Vancouver Canadians 3, Everett AquaSox (SEA) 5

The Vancouver Canadians (12-7) opened their series against the Everett AquaSox by falling 5-3.

The offence came up with just five hits with Tanner Kirwer (Sherwood Park, Alta.) going 1-for-2 with two walks and three stolen bases, scoring twice. Cameron Eden was on base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI including a sac fly and stealing a base while Tanner Morris was 1-for-4 with a run and Luis De Los Santos was 1-for-4. DJ Neal was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

On the mound, Sean Wymer had a strong outing, going six innings and giving up just one run on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Brandon Eisert allowed a run on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts in just two innings while Parker Caracci took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits with a strikeout in one inning.

Roster Note: Lazaro Estrada was sent back to the Dunedin Blue Jays from Vancouver while Troy Miller was sent up to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Sam Ryan was sent to Vancouver from New Hampshire and Brayden Bouchey (Vancouver, B.C.) was released.

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Tampa Tarpons (NYY) 3

The Dunedin Blue Jays (6-13) lost to the Tampa Tarpons, but only allowed three runs in a 3-2 loss, a big improvement from the last series these two clubs faced off.

Leading the way was Zac Cook, a 2020 minor league free agent, who was 3-for-4 in his major league debut, hitting a double and scoring twice. Leonardo Jimenez was 2-for-3 with a walk and Zach Britton was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Jhon Solarte had the club's other hit, going 1-for-3.

Naswell Paulino had the start, allowing just two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Thomas Ruwe allowed a run on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning and Gabriel Ponce gave up two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings. Wilgenis Alvarado made 2021 debut, throwing a scoreless innings, walking one, striking out one and hitting a batter.

Roster Notes: Wilgenis Alvarado was assigned to Dunedin from extended spring training while Lazaro Estrada rejoined the team from Vancouver. Glenn Santiago was sent back to extended spring training and Zac Cook and Jefferson Herrera were both assigned to Dunedin.
