Jay Blue: Toronto Blue Jays' organizational depth chart - Third Base
November 8, 2019
By Jay Blue
Blue Jays from Away
It's time to take a look at the Blue Jays' organizational depth chart as it sets up heading into the offseason. We'll go position by position and hope to chart out the Blue Jays' minor leaguers to see who stands where. I've ordered the following list by projected 2020 starting level.
Third base is another position that players will usually slide down the positional spectrum to as they age and develop as players and therefore, we probably won't have too many younger players listed as third basemen.
Toronto
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. TOR
Brandon Drury TOR
Breyvic Valera TOR
Filling this position at the major league level is a no-brainer, at least for another year. Vlad will play third and the Jays will continue to assess whether the 20 year old will continue to improve.
Buffalo
Andy Burns BUF
Santiago Espinal BUF
Our depth chart for second base in Buffalo is the same as for third base. Andy Burns did not become a free agent and he can play at third base for the Bisons while Santiago Espinal may get some time there, but I think there will be a corner-infielder minor league free agent or two who plays in Buffalo as well.
New Hampshire
Nash Knight NH/BUF
Cullen Large NH
Vinny Capra NH
Nash Knight is at the top of this list because he could also get time as a utility man in Buffalo while I think Cullen Large gets most of the playing time at third base to start 2020. Vinny Capra can play the position but will probably get more time at second base than third.
Dunedin
Nick Podkul DUN
Johnny Aiello DUN
Jesus Navarro DUN
Nick Podkul has the most experience at the level but I think Johnny Aiello will move up to Dunedin and try to keep his solid power numbers from Lansing going at the Advanced-A level. Navarro will be a utility infielder and backup.
Lansing
Ronny Brito LAN
Trevor Schwecke LAN
Luis De Los Santos LAN/VAN
Lansing is going to be an interesting place for third basemen. I thinnk Trevor Schwecke and Ronny Brito could split playing time although I can see Brito only joining the club out of extended spring training. Luis De Los Santos had a rough season in Vancouver last year and could also go to extended until he's ready to hit better pitching at Lansing.
Vancouver
Angel Camacho VAN/BLU
Davis Schneider VAN
Camacho was a relatively high draft pick by the Blue Jays last spring, going in the eighth round but he didn't really excel in his pro debut in Bluefield. Still, I don't think there's much reason to hold him back from Vancouver. Davis Schneider will get most of his reps at second base but could back up a bit at third too. Vancouver's 2019 infield was almost exclusively 2019 draftees so I wouldn't put it past the Jays to draft someone who's going to play third for the Canadians in June of 2020.
Bluefield
Joseph Reyes BLU/VAN
Orelvis Martinez BLU
Yhon Perez BLU
There are a couple of interesting names here. Joseph Reyes hits for a lot of power but he struck out a ton in Bluefield in 2019, making it somewhat likely he repeats the level to start 2020. Orelvis Martinez will probably get most of his playing time at shortstop but could also keep moving towards third base as his ultimate landing spot positionally.
GCL
Jose Zepeda GCL/BLU
Gustavo Gutierrez GCL/DSL
Francisco Fajardo GCL/DSL
Like with just about any other position for the Blue Jays at the Rookie-ball level, we can project some promotions from the DSL of the 2019 team (the GCL Blue Jays were almost exclusively Latin-American players coming up from the DSL in 2019).
DSL
Leonel Callez DSL/GCL
Emmanuel Sanchez DSL/GCL
Again, I'm not going to go through all of the Jays' 2019 international signees to figure out which "shortstop" will actually play third base. The guys listed above are holdover from the 2019 club.
