The Junior National Team fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 16-11 loss to the New York Mets Extended squad on Wednesday.

The Juniors scored 11 runs on nine hits and committed three errors in the 10-inning game.

Box Score

The Junior National Team pitching staff could not stop the explosive Mets offence, allowing a total of 13 earned runs on 19 hits and 10 walks while striking out seven.

Jorge Valdes (Milton, Ont.) got the Juniors on the board in the third, working a bases loaded walk in what looked like a very promising inning for the Canadians. However, they would score just once and be kept off the scoreboard until the seventh when Calvin Warrillow (Toronto, Ont.) lined an RBI single with the bases loaded. The Juniors added two more runs in that inning with some good baserunning and by taking advantage of two wild pitches by Mets hurlers.

The Juniors’ offence hit full gear in the ninth inning, sparked by Cam Macleod (North Vancouver, BC), who belted a solo home run to lead off the inning. Jorge Valdes (Milton, Ont.) joined the party with an RBI single. The six-run inning was capped by a Myles Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) two-run double. Simon Baker (Cochrane, Alta.) also had a notable performance at the plate, finishing 2-for-2.
