Juniors shut out by Brewers at World Cup Qualifier Selection camp

The Junior National Team was defeated 7-0 by the Milwaukee Brewers DIL squad in a rain-shortened, six-and-a-half inning game during their WBSC Americas U18 Baseball World Cup Qualifier Selection Camp on Monday.

Benjamin Soke (New Maryland, N.B.) started for the juniors and allowed an earned run on three hits, while striking out three, in three innings. Matt Sargeant (Ancaster, Ont.) then came out of the bullpen and permitted four earned runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. He also struck out two batters.

The Juniors struggled offensively, collecting only three hits. One bright spot was Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, Ont.) who collected a double. Brendan Lawson (North York, Ont.) finished 1-for-2 with a hard single and a walk, while Noah Konings (Brampton, Ont.) had the only other hit, registering a hard single down the third base line to start the third inning.

From October 24 to November 1, the Junior National Team program will play eight games against seven different MLB Professional Academies in the Dominican Republic.

The exhibition contests are in preparation for the WBSC Americas U18 Baseball World Cup Qualifier that will take place in La Paz and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico from November 4 to November 14.

The top four countries in the 12-team tournament will earn a spot in the 2023 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Tainan, Taiwan.
