BMOCs Kellogg, Baksh, Gapp, Palumbo

 * Ryan Kellogg was hit above the elbow with an elbow, but still gained the win as the Arizona State Sun Devils edged Oklahoma State. It was the Ontario Prospects' grad's 20th career win at ASU. ....

Arizona State Sun Devils LHP Ryan Kellogg (Whitby Ont.) was knocked out of the game but he wasn’t knocked for a loop.

Oklahoma State’s Jon Littell hit a liner through the box which hit Kellogg just above his left elbow. Kellogg stayed in long enough to catch Littell trying to steal, but did not return for the sixth.

Kellogg picked up the win in No. 18-ranked ASU’s 5-3 decision over No. 5-ranked Oklahoma State pitching five innings allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out four. For the former Ontario Prospect, who played for Rich Butler and Rob Butler it was his 20th career win, including his eighth over a ranked opponent.

The lefty is expected to make his second start Saturday when the TCU Horned Frogs come to town.

 

BAKSH HOFer: OF Jonathan Baksh (Mississauga, Ont.) was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame Friday. The former Ontariojonathan baksh Blue Jay, who played for Dan Bleiwas, was inducted along with ross country harrier Sara Trané, volleyball player Kari Wanat, the 1974-75 men’s varsity lightweight eight and 1989-90 men’s hoops team.

Baksh, FIT’s highest drafted player, selected in the seventh round by the Toronto Blue Jays, was a three-time All-American, two-time First Team All-Sunshine State Conference selection and SSC Player of the Year in 2005. He was also FIT Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2006 and a three-time honoree on the SSC Spring Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He led the SSC in hitting his junior year, batting an outstanding .469.

Baksh earned Canadian Baseball Network college player of the year honors in 2006.

 

FOW: C Austin Guzzo-Foliaro (Brooklin, Ont.) of the Iowa Hawkeyes earned Big 10 Freshman of the Week honors. 

The former Ontario Blue Jays was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in a 4-1 win over the George Mason Patriots. He drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth with in his first collegiate hit and he threw out both would-be base stealers.

He is the first Hawkeye to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Sasha Kuebel on May 21, 2012.

 

ZERO BALLS IN THE GAPP: RHP Noah Gapp (St. Albert, Alta.) was an easy choice to start the conference opener for the Merced Blue Devils noah gappagainst the Porterville Pirates.

The 6-foot-5 Gapp made sure it was the decision by his coach, turning in the team’s best start of the season. He allowed one run and six hits in eight innings in 15-3 victory.

Gapp improved to 2-1 with the win. Gapp was the model of efficiency, tossing 84 pitches in his eight innings. He struck out four, walked none and didn’t allow a Porterville runner in scoring position until the eighth. It was Gapp’s second quality start in his last three outings.

The Blue Devils had squandered an 11-0 lead against Cypress.

 

HOW BOUT THOSE PANTHERS? Zach Sardellitti (Maple, Ont.) had seven hits in 11 at bats with a double and five RBIs as Davenport Panthers swept a three-game series over Union Bulldogs at Barbourville, Ky.

Zac Wilson (New Lowell, Ont.) hit 500 (6-for-12) with a double and four RBIs. Johnny Palumbo (Georgetown, Ont.) had a pair of hits, Jonathan_Palumboincluding a home run.

Sardellitti and Palumbo are grads of the Ontario Terriers having played for Scott Van de Valk.

 

NCAA BMOCs Ontario Blue Jays grads: LHP Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) gained his first college win in his first start for the Evansville Purple Aces pitching six innings allowing thee unearned runs in a 16-3 verdict against the Arkansas Little Rock Trojans. He allowed four hits and three walks, while striking out five ... Phil Diedrick (Ajax, Ont.) homered and knocked in two runs as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers topped the Coastal Carolina Chantileers 9-4 in the seventh annual Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway S.C. He had a pair of hits in a 7-3 loss to the Maryland Terps ... 2B Mike Foster (Pickering, Ont.) was 4-for-4 as the Northeastern Huskies loss 6-1 to the Incarnate Word Cardinals in San Antonio, Tex. Foster had two more hits against Incarnate Word in a 9-3 win ... SS Joey Hawkins (Whitby, Ont.) had a pair of hits and knocked in a run for the Missouri State Bearcats in a 12-0 romp over the joey hawkinsWashington State Cougars in the Stephen F. Austin tournament at Nacogdoches, Tex. Hawkins singled in a 7-2 win over the Texas Alrington Mavericks ... RF Julian Service (Sarnia, Ont.) singled in a pair of runs as the Southeastern Louisiana Lions beat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 6-1 and added two more in a 7-1 win over La Tech. Then, he doubled and singled in a 19-10 win against Jackson State Tigers ... IF Jevon Jacobs (Ajax, Ont.) is hitting .308 with two doubles and four RBIs for Jackson State. He also picked up a save with a 2 2/3 innings scoreless outing in a 20-10 win over Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks.

 

Terriers grads: OF Brian Doran (Ayr, Ont.) started 6-for-11 (.545) as the Maine Black Bears opened with a series against the Milwaukee Panthers. Doran knocked in two runs in a 6-4 win ... Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ont.) of the Stony Brook Seawolves delivered in the season opening a 6-0 win over Nicholls State Colonels. Up 2-0 in the fifth Peragine had a two run double to right ... RHP Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) made his second straight opening day start for the Stanford Cardinal and had a no decision versus the Indiana Hoosiers. He pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing one run and striking out six ... 3B David Head (Claremont, Ont.) of the Northern Kentucky Norse had two hits in a pair ofDavid_Head_Baseball games in a pair of doubleheader splits against the Campbell Flying Camels ... . OF Cole Bauml (Fort Saskatchewan, Sask.) leads Northern Kentucky in hitting with a .471 average. He has eight hits: six doubles and a triple to go with three RBIs ....  SS Tomas Rodrigues (Montreal, Que.) had two hits and knocked in a run, while DH Daniel Procopio (Toronto, Ont.) singled in two runs as Niagara fell 17-5 to the Austin Peay Governors. Rodrigues doubled and singled in a 15-5 loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies.

 

NCAA Div II Blue Jays grads: Jeff Martin (Ajax, Ont.) leads the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers with a .417 average in 12 games with three doubles, a triple, one homer and 12 RBIs. Martin was 4-for-4, with a triple and three RBIs in a 7-6 win over Regis, while 3B Josh Caruso (King City, Ont.) had two hits and a double, as Jason Freeman (Mississauga, Ont.) doubled in a run ... Former Daniel Szpik (Toronto, Ont.) daniel SzpikHSdoubled and singled and knocked in a run in a Florida Tech 9-0 win over the Pace Setters. And in the nitecap he had three hits, including a double and three RBIs in a 20-1 win.

JUCOs Blue Jays grads: Conner Stevenson (Keswick, Ont.) hit his third homer of the season for the Connors State Cowboys in a 3-2 loss to Lake Land. Stevenson had two hits, including a homer and two RBIs in a 7-4 win over Mineral Area, while SS Bryce Dimitroff (Burlington, Ont.) singled. Stevenson also homered and Dimitroff had two hits in a 23-0 win over the Bacone Warriors ... LHP Steven Dressler (Burlington, Ont.) pitched six scoreless in an 8-2 Cisco Wranglers win over Odessa. He allowed two hits and two walks, striking out six ... C Owen Spiwak (Mississauga, Ont.) had a pair of hits as Odessa edged Cisco 4-3. Spiwak was 2-for-4 knocking in a 9-7 Odessa win over Baton Rouge and singled in a 3-1 win over the San Jacinto Gators. ...
