Kendal, 1976 senior champs, soar into Hall of Fame

The Kendal Eagles didn’t fool around back in 1976.

The Eagles went 13-11 in the regular season of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Assoociaition, they then won the tournament of champions outscoring the opposition 32-11 and moved on to the OBA playdowns.

Back then there were not any one weekend, double knockout championship tourneys. Rather it was a series of best-of-three sets.

The final round was played against Hagersville. In the first game, Kendal was trailing 1-0 in the fifth when Bill Robinson hit an opposite field grand slam. Kendal won 6-4 as Mike Carmen pitched six innings and Eric Moore came on to pick up the win.

A huge local crowd was on hand for the second game in Kendal. Hagersville took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and the lead held up to the bottom of the eighth when Kendal scored six and went on to win 6-1. The legendary Ralph Kennedy was superb giving up four hits while striking out nine. Once again Bill Robinson was the offensive star driving in the tying and winning runs in the eighth.

Jim Lutton presented the OBA Senior D trophy to captain Bill Robinson.

Bill Robinson was MVP while Pete Henderson won the Stark Trophy.

Next up were the Renfrew Red Sox. Kendal won the first game 15-1 as Ralph Kennedy pitched nine innings allowing five hits while striking out 13. Jerry Thompson went 4-for-5 at the plate.

In the second game, Kendal fell behind 7-2 after three innings but managed to score 15 runs in the fifth and went on to win 25-12. Eric Moore pitched nine innings while Bill Robinson went 6-for-6, garnering four RBIs. Pete Henderson had five RBIs.

Arnold Wade, Roy Foster and Grant Wade formed the Eagles in 1970 as proud members of the EOBA playing Whitby, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Little Britain, Belleville, Kingston, Brockville, Prescott and Renfrew.

Charles Reid was president with Brian Foster the vice president. Directors were

Bert Reid, Ed Couroux and Peter Maartense.

The Eagles won OBA senior titles in 1983, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2017 and 2018.

This fall, the latest notch in the Kendal championship belt, Kendal pounded out a 19 hit attack for a 16-3 win against the New Lowell Knights giving the Eagles their second straight Senior AA OBA championship at Harvey Jackson Memorial Park in Kendal.

Four were wild as the saying goes ... Logan Walters and Nick Stone each went 4-for-4 in support of a Ryan Norris, who threw a four hitter.

Kendal grabbed the lead early up 2-0 into the fifth inning, when the offence opened the floodgates with eight hits and six runs to take a 8-0 lead. A Ben DeBoer grand slam ended the game in the sixth inning.

In morning semi-final, Kendal defeated the Exeter Express in a back and forth affair 7-6 in eight innings. The Eagles tied the game, took the lead in the top of the seventh only to have Exeter score one in the bottom half. Kendal scored the winning run in the eighth inning on a Tyson Robinson squeeze.

Kendal started the tournament with a 7-4 win over the Clarington Cubs. Game 2 saw the Eagles defeat New Lowell 7-0 led by three doubles from Logan Stewart and a complete game four-hit shutout from Brodie Harkness, grandson of former New York Met and Los Angeles Dodger Tim Harkness.

In Game 3 Kendal scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back defeating the Kincardine Cubs 9-4 as Lars Clay and Owen Sharp combined on a 4 hitter.

The Eagles have now won three OBA championships in the last 5 years. This was the first time in the 48 year history of the Kendal Eagles that they have won back-to-back OBA Championships.

This group was coached by Chad Maartense and Mark Foster.
