If you close your eyes, you can almost feel the warmth of the Florida sun and hear the sounds of baseball.

David Alvarez (Woodbridge, Ont.) was living it this past weekend for the Northwest Florida State Raiders.

And living it well.

Alvarez started his 2025 campaign with a 2-for-4 game in a 4-3 victory over the State College of Florida.

He kept it going in Game 2, putting together a 3-for-4 performance in a 6-2 loss to Miami Dade.

As good as his first two games were, he saved the best for last. He helped his Raiders escape with a 9-8 win over the State College of Florida and a winning record on opening weekend by going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a triple.

How’s a .727 average to open the season sound?

Not bad.
