WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish have announced the return of Mattingly Romanin and Tyler Wood from the inaugural 2019 season.
Romanin, a 5-foot-10 infielder, rejoins the Jackfish following a productive 2019 season. In his fourth IBL season, Mattingly recorded a .294 batting average with two doubles, a triple, eight RBI and six stolen bases in 18 games.
Being selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 39th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Romanin split the 2017 season between the Blue Jays’ class-A clubs in Vancouver and Lansing. He collected 36 hits, 13 doubles, 17 RBIs and two stolen bases in 57 games to help Vancouver win the Northwest League championship.
The Burlington, Ont., product graduated from Notre Dame High School in Burlington and spent time with the Ontario Terriers before committing to Chicago State University. In his time at the NCAA Division-1 school from 2012 to 2015, Romanin became the team’s all-time leader in hits (224), RBIs (118), and doubles (41), while also earning 2013 All-GWC (Great West Conference) First Team and 2014 All-WAC (Western Athletic Conference) Second Team All-Star honours.
Wood, a 5-foot-10, a left-handed pitcher from Niagara Falls, Ont., rejoins the Jackfish following eight appearances with them in 2019. In 17 1/3 innings of relief, he recorded six strikeouts and 12 walks. The 2021 season will be the former Fanshawe College Falcon’s third in the IBL.
The Welland Jackfish are a member of Canada’s top baseball league, the Intercounty Baseball League. The 100-year old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, with the league established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
