Mendham knocks in three in Gamecocks' win

COLUMBIA - The University of South Carolina baseball team belted out 13 hits and received solid pitching from the duo of Will Sanders and Brett Kerry in a 13-4 win over Missouri Sunday afternoon at Founders Park.

Brady Allen had three hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Josiah Sightler, Andrew Eyster and Colin Burgess had a pair of hits apiece. Allen and Sightler scored three runs apiece in the win.

Sanders started the game for the Gamecocks and gave up a home run on the first pitch but settled down to allow just four hits and two runs with six strikeouts and no walks. Kerry earned the win out of the bullpen, striking out eight and allowing six hits and two runs with no walks in four innings of relief.

Carolina opened its scoring on a two-run single from David Mendham (Dorchester, Ont.) in the first. The Gamecocks added a pair in the second on Brennan Milone's first home run of the year.

The Gamecocks added three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run Colin Burgess single. Carolina put up a five-spot in the eighth as Allen and Sightler had run-scored base hits and Eyster delivered a two-run home run to right field.

POSTGAME NOTES

-Carolina improves to 15-2 at Founders Park this season.

-Kerry improved to 9-1 on the mound with a 2.67 ERA in his Carolina career.

-The Gamecock pitching staff did not allow a walk for the second straight Sunday.

-Burgess now has a 12-game reached base streak after his 2-for-5 day.

-Mendham finished 1-for-2, with three RBIs and two walks
