Seven innings wasn’t enough to decide a winner at the Dairy Queen Canada 13U National Atlantic Championships in Summerside, PEI on Sunday, so they decided to play 14 and it was Jack Rowell’s RBI single that cashed in Luke Coughlin to give Capital District a thrilling 10-9 win over Fredericton.
Fredericton had built a five-run lead after three innings before Capital District clawed their way back to tie the score and send the game to extras.
Both clubs traded runs in the ninth but the game ultimately need more time to decide a winner.
Coughlin started for Capital District and tossed two innings before giving way to Brett Arsenault who struck out eight batters over 5 1/3 innings of work. Wil White then worked 6 1/3 innings and fanned nine before giving way to Jack Burke who was credited with the win.
Offensively, Capital District was led by Coughlin’s 4-for-6 game at the plate while Jack MacKinnon and Jack Rowell knocked in a pair of runs each.
Fredericton starting pitcher Jayden Chiasson tossed 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Sam Gallagher who worked the final 8 2/3 innings but was tagged with the loss.
Owen Blacquier had three hits in seven trips to the plate and scored two runs for Fredericton.
In the bronze medal contest, Jackson Montreuil tripled as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate with one RBU to lead Halifax (NS1) to a 9-1 win over Kennebecasis Valley (NB2). Halifax overcame a one-run deficit scoring six runs in the fifth before adding three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Benito Bonilla tossed five innings of one run ball to get the win and had eight strikeouts while adding a pair of hits and two RBI at the plate.
