National Championships: Newmarket captures 22U Men’s title

OTTAWA – Logan McKnight tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and struck out five over seven innings, to lead the Newmarket Hawks (Ontario 2) to a 3-1 victory over host Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to win the gold medal at the 22U Men’s Championship at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.
Newmarket took advantage of two walks in the second inning that saw Jakob Cellupica and Ashton Feijo score runs before adding an insurance marker in the seventh when Aiden Ament came up with an RBI single.
Dartmouth scored their lone run in the third coming in the form of a Layton Cuvilier solo homer to come to within one run of the lead.
Cuvilier started on the mound for Dartmouth and delivered a solid performance giving up two runs on two hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts.
Kitchener wins bronze
In the bronze medal contest, Kitchener (Ontario 1) came out slugging as they scored 14 runs on 17 hits to come away with a 14-4 win over New Brunswick representatives, Fredericton.
Ben Zehr and Will Pollard each drove in three runs for Kitchener while Tyler Kaal picked up the win going four innings with no earned runs allowed and three strikeouts.
In semi-final action, Newmarket earned a convincing 9-1 win over Fredericton in the first contest of the day before a wild affair that saw Dartmouth build a nine-run lead only to see Kitchener score nine times in the sixth including a Blake Jacklin grand slam to tie the game.
Cam Rendell was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded to give Dartmouth the walk off win.
