Official Saskatoon Berries News Release

SASKATOON, Sask. – From ticketing to sponsorship, merchandise to ballpark upgrades, player/coach signings to building a passionate fan base, the Saskatoon Berries Baseball Club is busy gearing up for the 2024 season.

The Saskatoon Berries staff have lots of work to do in preparation for the team’s inaugural campaign in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) next summer, and much has already been accomplished by the expansion franchise.

Before the Saskatoon Berries were born, the Saskatoon Baseball Club launched a “Name the Team Campaign” that garnered media attention across the province of Saskatchewan. With over 2,000 submissions, a list of the top 10 submitted team names were posted and fans were encouraged to vote for their favourite entry. After a week of voting – and over 2,000 votes received – the top four team names were announced in a final voting round.

Overall, the Saskatoon Berries team submission received the most votes from fans and was announced as the official name on July 13. Though fans on social media seemed torn, data showed that there were 206 Berry-related names submitted during the campaign.

The Saskatoon Berries team logo was officially unveiled on July 27. Reactions from the announcement were overwhelmingly positive, resulting in the team gaining widespread popularity on a global scale. The team’s primary colour is purple with a highlight colour of Carolina blue.

Official team merchandise is in the process of being manufactured and will fully launch in-store and online in the coming months.

The Saskatoon Berries are beyond excited to have Joe Carnahan as their first head coach. He comes to the team with many years of playing and coaching experience. He has built championship teams and was voted WCBL Coach of the Year four times.

More recently, the Saskatoon Berries have also announced the addition of Andrew Albers (North Battleford, Sask.) as the club’s pitching coach. He joins the team with experience playing internationally and in Major League Baseball (MLB).

The ultimate goal for the Saskatoon Berries is to provide baseball fans in Saskatoon with a winning team on the field and an experience unlike any other.
