Newton's HR leads Majors to Game 3 win in IBL finals

LONDON – Jakob Newton’s three-run blast in the second inning was the difference in London’s 6-3 win over Toronto in Game 3 of the Dominico Cup final Friday night at Labatt Park.

The Majors lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 Sunday in Toronto.

Tied 1-1, Newton took Marek Deska’s second pitch over the fence for his second home run of the playoffs. Newton leads all batters in the postseason with a .553 average and is tied for the lead with 17 RBIs.

Also for the Majors, Byron Reichstein went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, while Taylor Wright had three hits, an RBI and a run. Robert Mullen added an RBI, Daniel Perrier went 3-for-4 and scored and Keith Kandel plated a pair of runs.

Jose Arias (3-0) struck out six over six innings for the win. He allowed two runs on five hits with three walks.

Fernando Fernandez yielded a run on three hits over three innings for his first save. He struck out one and didn’t issue a walk.

Deska (1-1) was pulled with two outs in the fourth after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

Justin Marra hit a solo blast for the Leafs. Dan Marra drove in a run on two hits, Marcus Knecht added an RBI and Jordan Castaldo went 2-for-3.
