OBA winners: Badgers, Clinton, Peterborough, Riverside, Sudbury

Labor Day weekend meant cheers, dog piles and, in some cases, tears, as the Ontario Baseball Association championships were decided across the province.

At the triple-A bantam championship at Howard Talbot Park in Leaside: The London  Badgers knocked off the Mississauga North Tigers 6-3 in the final. The win went to Ryan Friesen (Woodstock, Ont.), while Brendan Mahood (Dorchester, Ont.) and Evan Prince (London, Ont.) each knocked in a pair of runs.

Missisauga North forced the finale in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off bases-loaded double by Carter Newman (Mississauga, Ont.) for a 6-5. victory at The Shrine.
 
The top pitcher of the weekend was Hamiton’s Joel Palmer (Waterdown, Ont.). He threw 90 pitches Friday night in a 2-1 win over Northumberland Jacks and 84 more Sunday in a 2-1 loss to the Hamilton Cardinals.

London beat the Riverside Royals 12-4 in the opener, the Barrie Baycats 10-5, the national champion Brampton Royals 6-5 and Hamilton 2-1. 

Riverside was blanked by the Milton Mets, but rallied to win the deciding game on a walk-off wild pitch.

At the triple-A minor bantam championships at Etobicoke: Riverside won on a walk off wild pitch to edge the surging Milton Mets in the finale.

Milton scored twice in the first inning to edge the Etobicoke Rangers, who had an impressive tourney, in a 2-1 win. Rangers RHP Keiran Martini-Wong (Etobicoke, Ont.) pitched five strong innings. He also pounced on two bunt attempts like Harvey (The Cat) Haddix and turned them into double plays ... a 1-5-3 and a 1-2-3 DP.

Milton then blanked Riverside 4-0 on a two hitter to reach the final. 

At the peewee C championships in Waterdown: Clinton ended a 23-year drought beating Essex twice to take the title.


Tigers defeat the Blues in extra innings to capture title!

At the AAA Major Rookie level: The Peterborough Tigers edged the North York Blues 7-6 in eight innings for the title.

The name Ty Crawford is well known around Christie Pits. It is also well known after Tyler Crawford lined a ball past third to drive in the winning run. Crawford earned  MVP honours.

North York had scored three in the top of the eighth. With one out in the bottom half, Jack Hatton and Philips each doubled. Lucas Cavanagh hit an infield single and one out later Thomas Dalliday singled through the infield to score Philips. Garrett Jones doubled to left to tie the score setting the stage for Crawford.

The Tigers opened with a 6-5 win against Hamilton as Cole Cavanagh earned game MVP honours 

Brett Crowley delivered the game winning hit down the first base line to score Jones for a 10-9 win as Crowley was named game MVP.

Dalliday had two hits and showed off his glove in right field earning game MVP honours in a 12-0 win over Guelph. 

Beau Marshall scored the game winner, was a highlight reel in the field and game MVP as Peterborough edged North York 6-5. 

Ayden Turner had a multi-hit game helping the Tigers thump Halton Hills 11-3. Turner had the game MVP. 

North York scored a 4-1 win to create a winner-take all game.

At the Minor Mosquito level: The Northumberland Jacks won their first OBA title with a 6-3 win against St. Thomas. 

Northumberland opened with wins over Strathroy, Simcoe, Kawartha, and Halton Hills. The Jacks then beat beating Woodstock 9-3 in the semi final.

At rookie ball A championships in Delaware: The Sudbury Shamrocks scored six times in the first and then hung on for a 8-7 win over Collingwood. Ryan Thompson’s double knocked in the game winner in the bottom of the sixth.

The Shamrocks opened with back-to-back-to-back homers from Alex Marshfield, Ty Dubreuil and Tanner Morris paced a 24-8 victory over East Mountain.

Next came a 14-2 win over Waterloo.

Owen Lamothe turned a key double play to keep the score knotted and then in the bottom half Subury scored for a 9-8 victory.

Sudbury beat Delaware 8-1 in the quarter-finals Morris belted a two-run homer and a triple, Dubreuil added a triple and Peyton Goudreau drove in three runs with a bases-clearing triple.

Next the Shamrocks edged Sault Ste Marie Black Sox 13-9, earning a berth in the final thanks to a seven-run fifth keyed by Dubreil’s three-run homer.

Lamothe was the Most Sportsmanlike Player, Dubreuil was the top defensive player and Morris earned game MVP.


At the minor bantam A championship in Bolton, Ont.: Sudbury thumped Guelph 10-0 as Carson Harvey pitched the complete game. The Shamrocks teams by a 70-14 over six games. 
 
The win gave Sudbury third all-Ontario crown in the past four years.

The Shamrocks knocked off Newmarket 18-3, Ajax 7-1, Guelph 14-4, Lasalle 7-4 and Richmond Hill 14-2 before the final. 

Ryan Lacasse, Justin Lancup and Harvey did the starting, while Cole McPhee, Caleb Sanders, Scooter Rienguette and Brett Richardson worked in relief.
