What an ending to an incredible Ontario Blue Jays Summer Experience!
OBJ capped off a 52-day trip where it all started, Fort Myers, Fla., and the PG Summer Select featuring teams from across the southern United States.
First up, the Orlando Scorpions, a familiar tournament foe, Matthew Marzec (Burlington, Ont.), Danny Farsalas (Aurora, Ont.) and Jeff Tiw (Burlington, Ont.) combined to hold the Scorpions at bay, allowing five hits while striking out five without allowing a run, in a 3-0 victory. Cole Patrick (Markham, Ont.) led the way offensively with Brandon Latter (Caledon, Ont.), Matt Sargeant (Ancaster, Ont.) and Sam White (Barrie, Ont.) adding RBIs.
Later that day, OBJ took down ECBA, 8-4 in a unique win. LHP Liam Watt (Burlington, Ont.) threw a no-hitter in relief, throwing seven innings, striking out 15 ECBA hitters in the win. Offensively, Jackson Somerville (Burlington, Ont.) and Jordin Limnidis (Milton, Ont.) led the way with two hits each, while Alex Ellert (White City, Sask.), Matt Sargeant, Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ont.) and Myles Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) add RBIs.
Next up, a close game against the Diamond Ducks - Led by strong pitching from Cam Johnson (Hamilton, Ont.) and Kansai Sugimoto (Kyoto, Japan) who combine to allow two runs while striking out 13 hitters. Infielder Corey Morro (Cheltenham, Ont.) came up with a few key hits going 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Brandon Latter and Lucas Vincent (Stouffville, Ont.) add RBIs to secure the 3-2 victory.
As the playoff bracket began, the Jays faced off against Legends Baseball in another close game. Kael Clarkson (Barrie, Ont.) took charge early in this one, throwing six innings, allowing only 3 hits while striking out 10 batters. OBJ was led offensively again by Corey Morro going 2-for-3 with Sam White picking up an RBI Triple to defeat the Legends, 4-2.
On to the Semi-Final against the Scorpions, in what was settled early in an 8-0 win. RHP Matthew Marzec threw a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts as the offence took over. Blake Jolicoeur (Whitby, Ont.) was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs, while Matt Sargeant and Myles Naylor combined for three hits, a double and two RBIs to pick up the victory.
In the Summer Select Championship, the Blue Jays did not slow down on their way to a convincing 9-1 victory over Puerto Rico. Jeff Tiw re-took the mound tossing five innings, allowing two hits while striking out four batters. Sam White and Corey Morro lead the offence and White had four RBIs on two hits - including a double - while Morro was 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs. The game ended as Evan Ashe (Acton, Ont.) threw out the would-be base stealer to secure the game and championship.
