COMMENTS:
The first series of the season is in the books as the Thunderbirds travelled to Portland, Ore. taking two of three against NCAA Division II Concordia University. Sophomore Ace Garrett Hawkins got the ball in Game 1, battling through five innings giving up three and striking out nine, doing so without allowing any walks. Behind him, Barry Caine and Adam Maier were able to shut down the Cavs bats pitching two scoreless innings apiece. The offence was led by Noah Or, 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Austen Butler 2-for-5, with two RBIs. Cam Sanderson pitched in late in the game to extend the lead with a two-out, two-run single as the Birds took game 1, 8-3.
In Game 2 of the Saturday double header, Jared Spearing took to the mound going four innings allowing two runs on eight hits. Spearing found himself in hot water multiple times throughout his outing but showed great presence getting out of multiple jams, striking out seven along the way. Surrendering only two runs, the offence was able to creep back in the game and eventually take the lead in the sixth thanks to a two-run double by Brett Corbeth. The combination of Shane Laforest, Brenden Logan and Ryan Beitel closed the game out allowing one run as the Birds took game 2, 4-3 to complete the Saturday sweep.
The series finale was less sharp as the Birds battled through multiple walks, HBPs, and errors along with only two hits from the offence in a 7-4 loss. UBC still found themselves tied after seven innings only to surrender three runs from the Cavs in the bottom of the eighth. A difficult ending to what was a positive start to the 2020 schedule, and now the Birds headed home to regroup for their upcoming trip to Mesa, Az. to face off with nationally ranked NAIA, Benedictine-Mesa.
The Thunderbirds also paid a visit to Oregon State in the fall which counts towards the official record for the season. In that game, the Birds had the lead most of the way until the Beavers pushed two across in walk-off fashion to take the win 3-2. Garrett Hawkins went four innings allowing one run on five hits and two strikeouts while Jared Spearing took the loss after allowing two runs in his two innings of work. Offensively, the Birds used the long ball to plate their two runs. Both Jaxon Valcke and Brett Corbeth launched solo shots.
Injuries to note for the Thunderbirds entering the season include pitchers, Adam McKillican (surgery), Kyle Stubbins (surgery), Daniel Sereda (arm), Brandon Woods (calf), and position players, Lucas Soper (goot) and Ben Mitchell (back).
