In his first game in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) with the Pratt Community College Beavers (Kansas), Quebecer Hugo Pépin shone.

A former member of the Dukes of Longueuil of the Quebec Elite Junior Baseball League, he had two hits (2-for-3), two runs and two RBIs. And the 6-foot-5 Pepin (Boucherville, Que.), who played first base in the contest, was also hit by a pitch and dropped a sacrifice bunt.

Pepin’s performance helped propel his team to a 13-12 victory over the Northern College Oklahoma-Tonkawa Mavericks.

Used as an emergency runner in the game, Jacob Carroll (Pirates de Laval) also scored a run.

In first game of the day, the Beavers lost 6-2 to the Mavericks. In that contest, Carroll (Rawdon, Que.), who was behind the dish for his club, was held hitless (0-for-3). His Quebec teammate Jacob Brault (Royal de Repentigny - LBJÉQ) pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk, while registering one strikeout.

Among other Quebecers playing in American universities and colleges, note that:

Aris Zimakas (Montreal, Que.) made his NCAA debut, when he was brought in in relief in the seventh inning at Oakland University. Zimakas retired the only batter he faced in his team’s 8-1 loss to the Middle Tennessee University Blue Raiders.

Remi Patry (Gatineau, Que.) and his teammates from the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles played a doubleheader against the Southwestern Christian University Eagles on Monday.

In his club’s 12-6 win in the second game, Patry had a walk in three trips to the plate. In the first game, he was used as an emergency runner, in a 3-0 loss.
