DUNEDIN, Fla.- Damiano Palmegiani will bring back some important lessons to his Vancouver Canadians teammates this season after his experiences at the World Baseball Classic.
The infielder will be going into his second season with Vancouver, the Toronto Blue Jays’ High-A affiliate.
He learned valuable tips from other players while representing Canada.
“Not making the moment too big, and being comfortable in uncomfortable situations,” he said. “I think a lead by example kind of thing, but . . . obviously I still learn by everyone around me.”
Palmegiani was born in Venezuela but moved to Canada at the age of five. He played baseball in his hometown of Surrey, B.C., before being scouted to play for Vauxhall Baseball Academy in Alberta when he was in high school.
The 23-year-old was drafted by the Blue Jays twice: cnce in the 35th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. He did not sign, and went to college instead. He was once again selected by the Blue Jays in the 14th round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
Palmegiani and Canadians teammate Dasan Brown (Oakville, Ont.) committed to Canada for the 2023 World Baseball Classic – a great opportunity for two young players to grow their game amongst players from all across the world.
In an exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs, the infielder made his presence known when with a 3-2 count in the ninth inning he launched a three-run home run.
Palmegiani played on the Junior National Team, but this was his first big moment on the men’s side.
However, as a team-oriented player, he thought about his teammates’ impressions first when he hit the home run.
“I appreciated that I could show my teammates that . . . if the moment comes and you need me, I’ll be ready,” he said.
And ready he was. Palmegiani was a bench player for the duration of the pool round and enjoyed the experience.
Canada is not finished with seeing the talent of Damiano Palmegiani.
Asked if he would play in the World Baseball Classic again in 2026, there was no hesitation.
“Yes, I would.”
