DAYTON – Wright State catcher Konner Piotto has signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers to begin his professional career.
Piotto becomes the third Wright State player to begin his pro career with Texas, joining Nick Shields and Tim Henry. Shields was a 29th round draft pick of the Rangers in 2002, while Henry signed with the team as a free agent to begin his career in 1981.
Piotto is the fifth Raider to begin his pro career this summer, joining Tyler Black (Stouffville, Ont.) Damon Dues, Quincy Hamilton and Jake Schrand.
Piotto (Abbotsford, BC) started 51 of his 77 games played in his three-year Raider career, including 39 starts and 42 total games this spring for the Raiders. A career .323 hitter, Piotto collected 17 doubles and a pair of homers as a Raider, driving in 27 career RBI while drawing 25 walks in three seasons.
The 2021 campaign saw Piotto hit for a .346 batting average, tallying 12 doubles and two homers while driving in 23 RBI while finishing with a .439 on-base percentage. Behind the plate, Piotto guided a Raider pitching staff that recorded 443 combined strikeouts this spring with a 4.41 team ERA. His play in the postseason earned him a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament team back in May.
