Quantrill, Naylor get spring invites to Padres big-league camp

PADRES ANNOUNCE NON-ROSTER INVITES TO MAJOR LEAGUE SPRING TRAINING

Pitchers and catchers are due to report Wednesday, Feb. 14, position players Feb. 19.

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced they have extended Major League Spring Training invitations to 24 players. Among those 24 players are five minor league free agents whom the Padres have signed to 2018 contracts that will be new to the organization this season, including right-handed pitchers Jonathan Aro, Michael Mariot and Robert Stock, catcher Raffy Lopez and outfielder Shane Peterson.

The list of non-roster invitees includes 13 right-handed pitchers, two left-handers, three catchers, four infielders and two outfielders. Of the invitees, eight of the 24 have Major League experience. Additionally, 10 of the 24 were originally drafted by the Padres. Below is a complete and current list of all non-roster players who will attend 2018 Major League Spring Training:

Included in the invite -- which means hopefully some time in big-league spring games and ABOVE ALL major-league meal money -- are RHP Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) and 1B Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.).

James E. Clark, of the East Village Times, who covers the Padres like a tarp, has Quantrill ranked as San Diego’s third best prospect and Naylor is ninth best.

Quantrill, who turns 23 next month, split time at double-A San Antonio and class-A Lake Elisnore going 7-10 with a 3.80 ERA. In 116 innings he walked 40 and struck out 110. Quantrill pitches for the Ontario Terriers and coach Scott VandeValk.

Naylor, who turns 21 in June batted .280 at San Antonio and Lake Elisnore. Combined he had 25 doubles, two triples, 10 homers and 64 RBIs in 114 games. He had a .761 OPS walking 43 times and fanning 84 times. The slugging 1B played for the Ontario Blue Jays along with coaches Dan Bleiwas and Shawn Travers.
