Official Miami Marlins News Release

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins have agreed to terms with right-handed starting pitcher Cal Quantrill on a one-year major league contract.

In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett has been placed on the 60-day injured list following a left elbow UCL revision repair with internal brace surgery.

Quantrill, 30, went 8-11 with a 4.98 ERA over 29 starts with the Colorado Rockies last season, leading the club in wins and ranking third on the pitching staff in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts (110). He tossed at least five innings in 21 starts, lasting at least six innings in 12 of those outings and recording a quality start in each of them. He completed the year with his most starts, innings, and strikeouts since 2022 with Cleveland after making only 19 starts in 2023.

The right-handed pitcher has spent the majority of his major league career with the Guardians, going 27-15 with a 3.58 ERA in 99 games (75 starts) over four seasons. From 2020 to 2022, Quantrill pitched in 44 regular season games (34 starts) without suffering a loss at Progressive Field, going 14-0 with a 2.88 ERA. He joined former New York Yankee Vic Raschi (at Comiskey Park from 1947-53) as the only players in major league history to win 14 games without a loss at a single venue.

In 2021, Quantrill’s 149 23 innings pitched and 2.89 ERA led the Guardians pitching staff, while his 1.94 ERA in the second half of the season was the lowest in the American League. Quantrill also paced the Guardians staff in games started (32) during the 2022 season, setting career highs in innings pitched (186 1/3), strikeouts (128), and wins (15). His win total was boosted by 11 consecutive victories to close out the season, helping the Guardians clinch the AL Central title.

The Port Hope, Ont., Canada, native was originally selected eighth overall by the Padres in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Stanford University, and has compiled a 43-34 record, one save, and a 4.07 ERA in 161 games (123 starts) over six seasons split between the San Diego Padres (2019-20), Cleveland Guardians (2020-23), and Colorado Rockies (2024). Cal and his father Paul, 14-year major league veteran reliever and former Marlin, join Griffin and Jeff Conine, and Ryan and David Weathers as the third father-and-son duo on the Marlins roster.
