Okotoks, AB — The Regina Red Sox knocked off the Okotoks Dawgs 4-3 in the 10th inning on Sunday at Seaman Stadium.
In front of a capacity crowd of 4,889, Red Sox (16-7) second basemen Adam De La Cruz broke a 3-3 tie in the tenth when he singled off Craig Smith (Columbia College) to score Danny Hunt. Smith is now 0-1 this season.
The Dawgs (15-9) certainly had their chances late in the seventh, ninth and tenth with a pair of runners on, but stranded 16 runners on the evening.
The Red Sox took an early 3-0 lead after they put together six hits in the second and third off Dawgs starter Mason Swegarden (Mayville State University).
The Red Sox strung together four consecutive hits in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Riley Hickerson in the third after a leadoff single by Adam De La Cruz and double by Phil Langlois.
After that, Swegarden sat down the next 10 batters. He went seven innings and struck out five.
Hometown kid and Dawgs Academy product Danny Donnelly put the Dawgs on the board in the sixth when his single up the middle scored Will Hollis (Cisco Community College), who started the inning with a leadoff double.
Later in the sixth, Richard Mascarenas (Linn-Benton Community College) scored Donnelly on a double and Abdiel Alicea (Tabor College) picked up his third RBI on a fielder’s choice that scored Eddie Sanchez (Central Arkansas University).
Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision. Anthony Race worked a scoreless ninth and picked up his third win of the season. Ondrej Sebek worked a clean 10th to pick up his first save.
The Dawgs are now 0-2 in extra innings this season.
