Canadian right-hander Matt Brash has been traded by the San Diego Padres to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Taylor Williams, according to Dennis Linn, of The Athletic.

The Mariners and Padres announced the deal prior to yesterday’s trade deadline, but they didn’t identify Brash as the player to be named later.

Brash (Kingston, Ont.) would be the third Canuck that the Padres dealt on Monday. Earlier in the day, they swapped !B/OF Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) and RHP Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) to the Cleveland Indians as part of a package for RHP Mike Clevinger.

Brash, a Kingston Thunder and Niagara University alum, was selected in the fourth round (113th overall) by the Padres in the 2019 MLB draft. The 6-foot-1 right-hander, who was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Year in 2019, made his professional debut with the Low-A Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League in 2019. In four relief appearances with the TinCaps, the 22-year-old allowed just one run and struck out six in 4 1/3 innings. He also hurled a scoreless inning for the Padres in the Rookie ball Arizona League.

The Padres will receive Williams, 28, in the deal. He is 1–1 with six saves and a 5.93 ERA in 14 relief appearances with the Mariners this season. The Mariners claimed Williams off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers in February.

Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB draft by the Brewers, Williams has toed the rubber in the big leagues for parts of four seasons with the Brewers (2017–19) and Mariners (2020) and owns a 3–5 record and a 5.34 ERA in 85 relief appearances.
