OTTAWA - Canadian Mike Soroka suffered a horrendous season-ending injury Monday night when the Atlanta Braves ace hurler tore his Achilles tendon during the third inning against the New York Mets in Atlanta.
The Calgary native was breaking off the mound to cover first base after a ground ball when he fell to the pound in obvious pain. He was able to limp towards the dugout for few steps before moving to the ground where Braves' athletic therapist and fellow Calgary native Mike Frostad attended to him.
The loss of Soroka for the season is a huge blow to the Braves who have their sights set on making the playoffs after doing so in 2019.
Soroka, who turns 23 today, took the big leagues by storm in 2019 earning a trip to the All-Star Game and finishing second in National League Rookie of the Year voting after posting 13-4 record with a 2.68 ERA.
Respected around the game by teammates and opponents alike, there was an outpouring of support for the Junior National Team graduate once the news broke that he would be lost to the Braves for the remainder of the season.
Baseball Canada would like to wish Mike a speedy recovery and a return to health as soon as possible.
