ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Mason Dobie is about to hit a transition phase that might determine the next years of his life.

Born in Meaford, Ont., the 17-year-old third baseman on the Junior National Team, was chosen to play at Tournament 12 last fall.

That led to his place with the national side, where he’s aware the level of competition will only go up from here.

“The T12 was a highlight of my summer,” he said, at national team camp here on Friday. “Playing at Rogers Centre, competing (in front of) big leaguers, having them as coaches, playing the top 100 players from around Canada.”

Here in Florida, the club plays against mostly younger players from Major League organizations.

“The leagues back home, we're usually the best players on our team,” he said. “Facing pro guys, you're not expected to hit a home run every time, right?

“So, (it’s about) kind of taking a step back and realizing that you might not succeed as much, is crucial.”

Greg Hamilton, one head coach of the Junior National Team, addresses this specific concern.

“Most of the players here have had success, right? I mean, in their relative worlds, they're the better player,” said the national boss. “The problem with this environment is that you're making mistakes, and you're looking around for the first time in your life.

“Their confidence is shaken for the first time. It’s our job as coaches to say you fear for a reason, but it takes time to process and ultimately a belief in your ability and a commitment to the process.”

Mason is currently committed to playing for Ohio’s University of Dayton Flyers, a Division I school. After that, he’d like a shot at the big leagues.

“That has always been the goal, since I was a little kid,” he said. “That's always been a passion of mine to be to be a part of the big leagues. And that hasn't changed yet.

“So, I'm still hoping to get better every day and, you know, hopefully being in a big city one day.”
