Team Royal cruised to a 10-1 victory over Team Grey in the final game of the Canadian Futures Showcase played at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park in Ottawa on Thursday.
Team Royal managed to score 10 runs on just four hits, but they capitalized on 10 walks and seven errors by Team Grey.
Right fielder Kenny Scott (Delta, B.C.) led the way for Team Royal. He had a two-run single in the seventh, to go along with a run, a walk and a stolen base.
The top of Team Royal’s lineup also did some damage. Jorge Valdes (Milton, Ont.) was 1-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI, while Sam Shaw (Victoria, B.C.) contributed a hit, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Shortstop Tyson Vassart (La Salle, Man.) and Camden Sanders (London, Ont.) also scored two runs each for Team Royal, who tallied two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings.
Alex Kean (Woodstock, Ont.) started on the mound for Team Royal. After impressing at the plate earlier in the tournament, Kean tossed two scoreless innings against Team Grey. Jack Tiessen (Leamington, Ont.) followed and contributed two scoreless innings.
Meanwhile, Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (Ste-Pie, Que.) started for Team Grey and struggled with his control, walking seven batters in three innings. He also struck out five. Team Royal managed to score four runs off him without registering a hit.
Team Grey only recorded five hits in the contest. Leadoff hitter Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, Ont.) went 1-for-3 with a run, while Brodey Bitove (Toronto, Ont.) was the only player on either side to have two hits (both singles). Second baseman Evan Gunn (Oshawa, Ont.) also had the only extra-base hit of the game when he tripled in the fourth. For his efforts, he was named Player of the Game.
Team Grey will have to rebound quickly. They play Team Navy at 10 a.m. on Friday. Team Royal, meanwhile, will take on Team Red at 1 p.m.
