Due to travel restrictions and COVID-19 protocols, many NCAA college baseball teams have already begun critical conference games.
Typically the top four to six teams will advance to their respective conference tournaments come mid May. From there, a berth in the NCAA tournament and eventual trip to the College World Series is the goal.
The VCU Rams compete in the highly competitive Atlantic 10 Conference. Lefty Campbell Ellis (Georgetown, Ont.) is 3-0 and has a sparkling 2.08 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .242 off him. He picked up his victories over William and Mary, Towson and VMI. The Rams are 12-10.
The Niagara Purple Eagles are off to a 4-4 start. Catcher Joe Tevlin (Toronto, Ont.) has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, has 15 put outs and four assists on the defensive side. He is also getting it done with the bat, coming out of the gate with a lofty .364 batting average. The Purple Eagles host Quinnipiac University next weekend.
Right-hander Sam Turcotte (Toronto, Ont.) continues to impress for the Stony Brook Seawolves. They began America East conference play this past weekend with Turcotte picking up the win Saturday in Albany. He leads his team in IP with 29 1/3 and has a microscopic 1.84 ERA .Opponents are hitting a paltry .187 off him. Stony Brook is 7-7 on the season.
In Region III NJCAA action, scrappy ECC infielder AJ Karosas (Mississauga, Ont.) is off to a torrid start at the plate. He is 6-for-9 (.667), including a triple and four runs scored. This past weekend the Kats took down #10 ranked Herkiman College with a 5-4 victory. Erie CC is 4-4 on their young season.
