The Walker Files: Walker a hit on the road

Maple Ridge, B.C., native Larry Walker is worthy of a plaque in Cooperstown.

By Tracy Ringolsby

So much is made about the time Larry Walker spent with the Rockies, and the impact it had on his offensive production. Two things: players adapt to take advantage of the home field because it is where they play half their games, and even with the Coors Field factor, Walker compares favorably with Hall of Famers in terms of his road efforts.

Of the 123 Hall of Famers with at least 1,500 plate appearances, consider where Walker would rank among the current Hall of Famers in:

Average: .2780, 90th, between Andre Dawson (.2783) and Max Carey (.2777)

OBP: .370, 52nd, between Joe Cronin (371) and Duke Snider, Hank Aaron and Al Kaline (.369 each).

Slugging: .495, 36th, behind Larry Doby (.496) and ahead of Jim Bottomley (.486).

RBI: 564, 66th, behind Joe Morgan (573) and ahead of Roberto Alomar (554).

Home runs: 168, 37th, behind Al Kaline (173) and ahead of Gary Carter and Rickey Henderson (162 each).

Triples: 23, 104th, behind Carlton Fisk (24) and ahead of Ken Griffey, Jr., (22).

Doubles: 203, tied for 60th with Yogi Berra and Joe DiMaggio, behind Willie Stargell (204) and ahead of  Nellie Fox (202).
