Four Canadians are on the Toronto Blue Jays’ Fall Development League roster.
OF Dasan Brown (Oakville, Ont.), INF-OF Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.), J-C Masson (Levis, Que.) and RHP Curtis Taylor (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) will have an opportunity to improve and impress in Dunedin, Fla., this October. It’s an honour to be invited and a chance to make up time since the minor league seasons were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brown, an Ontario Blue Jays and Junior National Team alum, is a speedy centre fielder that was selected in the third round of the 2019 draft. He posted a .444 on-base percentage and stole six bases in 14 games for the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays in 2019. The fleet-footed 19-year-old also had two triples.
Signed as an amateur free agent on July 4, 2016, Lopez was born in Santo Domingo, D.R., but honed his skills in Montreal as a youngster. Now 21, he has three years in the Blue Jays’ organization under his belt. He progressed to low-A in 2019, where he hit .324 and had 145 hits and 20 stolen bases in 108 games.
Masson was selected in the 26th round of the 2019 MLB draft. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 6-foot-3 left-handed hitting outfielder has yet to see any game action in the professional ranks, but prior to chosen in the draft he suited up for the Junior National Team. In 2018 , he helped ABC win the Perfect Game 16U Elite Championship at Lupton Stadium on TCU campus in Fort Worth, Tex. when he batted (9-for-13) with two doubles, a homer and five RBIs in six games.
Taylor is a right-handed pitcher who from the University of British Columbia program. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016. After three seasons with the D-Backs, he landed in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization before he was dealt to the Blue Jays as part of a package for infielder Eric Sogard in 2019. In parts of five minor league seasons, the 25-year-old Canuck has reached the double-A level and has posted a 2.84 ERA in 83 appearances, including 18 starts.
The Fall Development League, formerly known as the Fall Instructional League, was designed largely to give teams an opportunity to evaluate and hone the skills of their best young prospects following the regular summer season.
