Ottawa, Ont. - The Ottawa Titans (54-38) ended the 2022 regular season home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Thursday, taking game one 6-5, and game two 2-1.
Game 1 - Ottawa 6, Trois-Rivières 5 (8)
The Aigles cruised out of the gate, scoring three times in the first. Eventually taking a no-decision, Tyler Jandron allowed three runs on four hits to open up the ballgame. Juan Kelly got the scoring started with an RBI single before Connor Panas (Toronto, Ont.) plated two with a base hit.
Kevin Perez silenced the Titans offensively through four, keeping the Aigles in front.
With one out in the fourth, Canice Ejoh (Toronto, Ont.) tripled to right-centre, later scoring on a Ricardo Sanchez single.
Trailing 4-0, the Titans rallied with a pair in the fifth to finally solve Perez. AJ Wright cashed in one with a double before Liam McArthur plated another with a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded, Perez got Jake Sanford (Cole Harbour, N.S.) to bounce into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
Jandron would get the hook after five, allowing four runs, on nine hits, striking out three. Gavin Sonnier and Grant Larson each tossed scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the deficit at two.
Down to their final out in the seventh, Sam Belisle-Springer (Rigaud, Que.) plunked Sanford to load the bases. On the next pitch, Kai Moody snapped an 0-for-3 with a two-run single to right, tying the game at four.
Kevin Escorcia allowed one to score in extras, leading to another Titans comeback in the bottom half of the eighth.
With the start-up runner in scoring position, Jacob Talamante reached on a bunt single. A fielder's choice ball off the bat of Tyrus Greene scored one to tie the game. Next, Wright lined a base hit to centre, plating the winning run.
Game 2 - Ottawa 2, Trois-Rivières 1
Zac Westcott delivered six-plus innings of one-run ball, leading to the sweep. The righty surrendered only five hits and struck out six, pulling into a tie for second in the league in wins.
The first two reached in the bottom of the first off right-hander Tucker Smith, as Clay Fisher brought home the opening run on a fielder's choice.
An E4 with two out kept the third alive, as Rodrigo Orozco reached. A walk of Fisher set up a Jake Sanford RBI single the opposite way, making it 2-0.
The Aigles got on the board with an RBI double from Canice Ejoh in the fourth, cutting the lead in half. A brilliant relay from Liam McArthur and Clay Fisher cut down the potential tying run at the dish, as Steve Brown was thrown out trying to score from first.
As the Titans went quietly at the plate, Westcott gave way to Kyle Serrano with one on in the seventh.
The righty got a strikeout to start things off, then secured the victory by getting LP Pelletier (Montreal, Que.) to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.
With the pair of wins, the Titans extend their winning streak to seven games and keep tabs on the second playoff spot in the East Divison, with three games to go.
The Titans finish the regular season with three against the Quebec Capitales starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m. from Stade Canac in Quebec City.
