Tournament Preview: 2018 WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup

VIERA, Florida – The 2018 edition of the Canadian Women’s National Baseball Team has been in Florida since last Wednesday preparing for the start of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup that gets underway on Wednesday at the USSSA Space Coast Complex.

Canada, currently ranked No. 2 in the world and the defending silver medalists from 2016, will face No. 10 Hong Kong on Wednesday to open the tournament.

Here’s what you need to know to follow Team Canada and the Women’s Baseball World Cup.

WHAT: The 8th WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup will take place in Viera, Fla., from August 22-31.

WHO: A 12-team field will compete For The Title of World Champion with Canada in Group B along with five-time defending world champions and world No. 1 Japan, No. 4 Australia, No. 9 Cuba, No. 10 Hong Kong and No. 13 Dominican Republic. Group A features host/No. 3 USA, No. 5 Venezuela, No. 6 Chinese Taipei, No. 7 Korea, No. 8 Netherlands and No. 13 Puerto Rico. Teams will play a round robin amongst their group in the Opening Round with the top three squads in each group advancing to the Super Round for crossover games. Following the Super Round, gold and bronze medal games will take place.

August 22 vs Hong Kong, 2PM ET

August 23 vs Cuba, 2PM ET

August 24 vs Japan, 6PM ET

August 25 vs Australia, 6PM ET

August 26 vs Dominican Republic, 2PM ET

The Super Round will take place from August 28, 29, and 30 with bronze and gold medal games slated for August 31st.

HOW TO FOLLOW: All 50 games of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup will be streamed on the WBSC’s YouTube channel.

CANADA ROSTER: Canada’s 20-player roster features 14 athletes with previous World Cup experience including Kate Psota and Ashley Stephenson who will both be playing in their eighth World Cup event. Newcomers include: Madison Willan, McKinlee Kaulbach, Emma March, Allison Schroder, Elizabeth Gilder and Kaitlyn Ross.
