U-18 World Cup: Canada falls to Italy in a close affair

SARASOTA, Florida - The Junior National Team came up just short against Italy in the second game of the Placement Round at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup, losing 3-2.

BOX SCORE – Canada 2, Italy 3

Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) started for Canada and allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings, while recording six strikeouts. Zak Szabo (Whitby, Ont.) came into the game to get the last two outs and permitted two hits and Italy managed to plate the winning run.

The Juniors failed to get anything going offensively after the Myles Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. Naylor would finish 2-for-3. Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, Ont.) and Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) picked up the other two Canadian hits. 

Canada will face off with Panama on Saturday, in their last game of the competition. The final six spots of the 12-team event will be determined on Saturday.

First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at LECOM Park in Bradenton.
