SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico – The Junior National Team fell to Cuba 6-2 in their final game of the placement round at the Americas U18 World Cup Qualifier on Saturday.
The game was a pitcher’s duel early until Cuba rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Juniors scored two runs on five hits in the contest.
Right-hander Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, Ont.) had an excellent start for Canada, allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out four, in four plus innings. Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (St-Pie, Que.) was also effective. The left-hander came on and recorded the final two outs in the fifth inning and then struck out the side in the sixth.
Myles Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) continued to swing a hot bat for the Juniors, smashing a solo home run in the sixth. Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) scored the other run for the Juniors after he singled in the top of the third inning and stole a base. Cardel Dick (Abbotsford, BC) also had a hit for Canada, finishing 1-for-3.
Canada completes the competition with a 2-3 record and missed a shot at qualifying for the 2023 WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup.
