SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico - The Junior National Team lost a nailbiter, 3-2, against Venezuela in their second game of the U18 Baseball World Cup Qualifier.

The Juniors scored a pair of runs on five hits in the contest, while committing no errors in the field.

Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, Ont.) was the starter for the Canadians. He worked four solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out one.

The two runs the Venezuelan squad scored against Pineau came on a two-run home run by Anthony Javier Gutierrez Goyo in the bottom of the third inning. Tate Carey (Windsor, Ont.) relieved Pineau and worked 2 2/3 innings, striking out three while permitting one run on two hits.

Second baseman Sam Shaw (Victoria, BC) led the Juniors’ offence. He came up with a clutch two-run double in the top of the fifth inning that scored Noah Konings (Brampton, Ont.) and Jorge Valdes (Milton, Ont.). Shaw would finish 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk. Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, N.S.) also collected a hit and a walk in the contest.

Canada will try to earn their first win of the tournament on Monday when they take on Peru at 6 p.m. E.T. in their third game of the tournament.
