Coaches’ Comments:

The Thunderbirds were finally back home to face off against the Oregon Tech Owls. It’s been over a month since the Birds last played in Vancouver, and the friendly confines of Tourmaline West played host to a historic weekend.

Starter Niall Windeler was as impressive as he’s ever been in Game 1. The Junior faced the minimum, throwing the fifth no hitter in program history. The battery of Windeler and senior C Zach Prisciak kept the Owl hitters off balance all game. Windeler struck out 10 as the lone baserunner reached on an error and was promptly erased by a double play.

Offensively, Jaxon Valcke was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Nolan Weger went 4-for-4 knocking in a pair of runs including his fourth home run of the year.

UBC carried the momentum into Game 2 of the double header as James Bradwell kept the Birds in the game in his eight innings of work. Bradwell surrendered three runs over eight while striking out eight. Jordan Dray provided the better part of the offense going 3-for-4, driving in three and hitting a home run. Barry Caine took care of the Owls in the ninth, earning the save as the Thunderbirds edged Oregon Tech 4-3.

Freshman Garrett Hawkins went Game 3 on Sunday morning and was strong through seven innings, only allowing 2 runs. Unfortunately the UBC hitters were outdueled by Owls starter Logan Nousen who went the distance in a two-hit shutout. Noah Or and Austen Butler were responsible for the two knocks, as the Birds couldn’t string anything together in the 2-0 defeat.

Trying to earn the series victory in the series finale, the Birds sent Freshman Danny Sereda to the mound. Sereda kept the Owls off the board in his four innings of work before handing the ball off to Barry Caine who would finish the final five innings allowing only one run. The game was scoreless through three innings before the Birds pushed two across to take a lead they would not give up. UBC would add one in the fifth and a big three-run home run by Ty Penner, put the Owls away in the seventh. The Thunderbirds would take game four, 6-1 and the series victory over Oregon Tech.

With the victory, The Thunderbirds have clinched either No. 2 or 3 seed in the Cal Pac Conference Tournament and will look to carry momentum into the post season with a non-conference game vs Seattle University and a final home series against the College of Idaho, next weekend.
