Coach’s Comments

The Thunderbirds travelled to Salem, Oregon for their final road trip of the conference schedule. Due to inclement weather, the series vs Corban was shortened to three games in which the Birds would drop two of three to the Warriors.

Junior starter Niall Windeler wasn’t as sharp as he usually is, surrendering six earned runs in four innings of work. The offence which got out to a two-run lead, thanks to a two-ru single by catcher Zach Prisciak, could not overcome a four-run fifth by the Warriors. Corban would add three more late in the game to take Game 1 by a final of 9-5. Noah Or and Brandon Hupe were both 4-for-5 from the plate.

Freshman Garrett Hawkins went Game 2 in the back end of the Friday double header and didn’t fare much better than Windeler. Hawkins went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs to the Warrior offense. Corban scored in each of the first four innings as UBC was playing catch up the entire day. The T-Bird offence put up 12 hits in the game but only plated four, leaving 11 men on base. A tough day for the Birds who drop both games to the Warriors.

The two teams were only able to get one game in on a weather impacted Saturday afternoon. Barry Caine got his first start of the year for the Thunderbirds and was brilliant. The Junior transfer went a scoreless 6 1/3 innings allowing one hit and striking out six. Caine set the tone for the Birds on Day 2 and the offence chipped in with two runs to take Game 3, 2-0. Two freshman relievers came in to shut the door for the T-Birds. Daniel Sereda went 2 1/3 scoreless and Brett Corbeth came in late to get the final out to shut out the Warriors.

With only two weekends left of conference play, the Thunderbirds sit in second place in the Cascade Conference, but own the first spot in the playoff format. LC State, who holds an automatic bid to the World Series does not participate in the Conference Tournament.

Furthermore, the top two teams excluding LC State will earn a playoff position in the Cal Pac Tournament in early May.

The Thunderbirds return home to close out the 2019 regular season, and will look to bounce back after two tough weekends in a matchup with Oregon Tech.
