VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds Baseball team has been honoured with the Cascade Collegiate Conference's Les Schwab Team Sportsmanship Award while four players have also received individual accolades as the conference announced its postseason awards Friday.
Ty Penner, Brandon Hupe, and Noah Or have all been named to the First Team All-Conference roster while outfielder Nathan Shute is a Golden Glove winner.
Tied for the sixth best conference batting average at .354, Penner also led the Thunderbirds in slugging percentage (.652 – fourth in CCC), on-base percentage (.458 – fifth in CCC), and RBIs (45 – eighth in CCC). The sophomore infielder also boasted an incredible OPS of 1.110 as he was a consistent force at the plate all season long.
Fellow sophomore Brandon Hupe tied with Penner for the team lead in home runs with 10. Twenty-one of his 41 hits went for extra bases. The Vancouver native finished the regular season with a .275 average and a .925 OPS.
Completing his fourth and final season with the T-Birds in 2022, Noah Or's .324 average was second on the team only to Penner while he led the blue and gold with 58 hits and 31 walks.
Appearing in every game this season for the 'Birds, Shute was a defensive stalwart in the outfield and at catcher, fully deserving of his 2022 Golden Glove award. Playing more than any other T-Bird in the field this season, Shute was tagged for just three errors with a fielding percentage of .981.
Winners of six straight to close out the season, the T-Birds begin play at the conference postseason tournament on Monday where they face the College of Idaho Yotes at 1:00 p.m. PT in Lewiston, Idaho.
