Etobicoke Rangers alum Joey Votto scored his 1,000th major league run on Friday.
Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, B.C.) is the only other Canadian to reach that milestone.
Votto, who scored the run on a two-run home run by fellow Cincinnati Reds slugger Eugenio Suarez in the fifth inning of the Reds’ 7-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Great American Ballpark last night, is also fifth on the Reds’ all-time run list.
Votto has now scored 70 runs for the Reds this season.
Over the course of his 13-yearleague career, Votto has scored 100 or more runs in a season five times. But the Canadian slugger still has a ways to go to catch Walker for the all-time lead. Walker recorded 1,355 runs in his 17-season major league career.
A seven-time winner of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s Tip O’Neill Award, the 34-year-old Votto owns a .264/.354/.416 slash line for the Reds this season and has belted 14 home runs in 125 games.
Last night also represented Votto’s 1,700th big league game, which puts him third on the all-time Canadian list behind Walker (1,988 games) and Fredericton, N.B., native Matt Stairs (1,895).
With 399 career doubles, Votto is also likely to reach 400 career doubles this season. Among the other milestones within his grasp in 2020 are 2,000 career hits (currently has 1,852), 300 home runs (currently has 283) and 1,000 RBIs (currently has 940).
