OTTAWA – The World Baseball Softball Confederation announced new dates for the 2020 Women’s Baseball World Cup now set to take place from November 12-21 in Tijuana, Mexico.

The event was originally scheduled to be played in Monterrey, Mexico in September but was forced into postponement due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The WBSC is excited to have a great baseball city like Tijuana and great baseball nation like Mexico host the top event in women's baseball, the Women's Baseball World Cup," said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari in a statement. "I am confident that our Mexican hosts will provide the perfect stage for the best women's baseball players in the world to compete on.”

Canada, the No. 2 ranked women’s baseball team in the world, will be joined by six-time defending world champions Japan (No. 1), along with host Mexico, Australia, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, Netherlands, Philippines, USA and Venezuela in the twelve-team field.

Coming off a bronze medal performance at the last Women’s Baseball World Cup in 2018 with a thrilling, extra-innings win over the United States, Canada will be looking to medal at a third consecutive world cup event after winning silver in 2016.

The Women’s National Team program has medalled at four consecutive international events starting with silver at the 2015 Pan Am Games, the two world cup medals in 2016 and 2018, and last summer’s bronze medal at the COPABE Women’s Baseball World Cup Qualifier.

All-time, Canada has collected six medals (two silver, four bronze) at eight world cup events dating back to the inaugural tournament in 2004.
