Okotoks Dawgs 6 Medicine Hat Mavericks 5
The Okotoks Dawgs overcame a two-run deficit in the bottom of ninth to walk off the Medicine Hat Mavericks after they were down to their final out with none on, winning the ballgame 6-5.
Mavericks pitcher, Jon Guardado made quick work of the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth, but then walked three-straight to load the bases, leading to a walk off single by Dawgs outfielder, Kory Longaker, who finished the ballgame 1-5 with three RBI’s.
The victory brings the Dawgs to 25-6 for the season, widening the gap between them and the second place Lethbridge Bulls in the WCBL’s West Division.
Melville Millionaires 8 Fort McMurray Giants 7
The Melville Millionaires began their tough Alberta road trip off with a win over the Fort McMurray Giants, winning by a score of 8-7. The victory moves the Millionaires closer to a playoff spot, as they now sit only 2 1/2 games back of the fourth place Moose Jaw Miller Express.
Melville outfielder, Dalton Horner finished the ballgame 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to his credit, while Kaiden Zacharias hit the only homer of the ballgame, finishing 1-4 with three RBIs.
Luke Summers got the start for the Millionaires and was dominant on the mound as he struck out nine Fort McMurray hitters in seven innings of work. Chris Lacher came in relief to pitch the final two innings, eventually earning the “win”.
Swift Current 57’s 3 Edmonton Prospects 2
The Swift Current 57’s continue to make their way up the WCBL’s East Division, as they now sit only two games back of the first place Weyburn Beavers after defeating the Edmonton Prospects 3-2 in extra innings.
It was a huge day for 57’s designated hitter, Alex Stinnett as he reached base four times in the ballgame, finishing 3-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Zachary Patterson received the start for Swift Current, tossing six innings, allowing only three hits, while striking out nine. Graeme Cherry and Diego Jordan each pitched two innings apiece to eventually earn the win after 10 innings.
Regina Red Sox 7 Weyburn Beavers 1
In a battle between the two top teams in the WCBL’s East Division, it was the Regina Red Sox who were victorious as they defeated the Weyburn Beavers 7-1. The win puts Regina only 1 GB of the Weyburn Beavers for top spot in the division with 26 games left to play.
Second baseman and lead off hitter, Ivan Nunez was the Red Sox spark plug tonight as he finished the ballgame 2-5 with a double and two RBI’s, as his teammate, Chris Diehl also contributed heavily, going 3-4 with two runs scored.
Matt Goertzen was the starter for Regina and tossed the first 4 2/3 innings for his club, striking out four batters, before the bullpen was put to work and didn’t allow a run, shutting down the Beavers offence as they tossed the final 4 1/3 innings.
