Windsor's Jake Lumley earns MAAC POW for Griffs

Senior Jake Lumley (Windsor, Ont.) was the highlight of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference awards banquet for Canisius on Tuesday, earning the conference’s player of the year award, as decided by league coaches. Lumley was joined on the All-MAAC first team with Liam Wilson, while J.P. Stevenson was named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
Lumley, had a career-year in his final campaign for the Griffs, setting new career-bests in batting average (.358), doubles (11), while leading the league in hits (77). Lumley not only paces the MAAC but ranks 61st in the country when it comes to recording hits, while he ranks 94th in the nation in hits per game with a 1.43 hits-per contest mark.
It was the first time Lumley has earned a major award, and the second time in his career he’s been named to a All-MAAC team. Last season Lumley earned second team honors.
A trend also extended on Tuesday, as the Blue and Gold have had at least one player or coach win a major award for 11-straight seasons, dating back to the 2007 campaign.
Joining Lumley on the first team is junior Wilson (Ayr, Ont.) native has been nearly as productive as Lumley, nipping at the heels of the starting shortstop in hits (53), and ranking fourth in doubles (17), and third in triples (three). Wilson finished the season with 36 RBIs, 39 runs and a batting average of .346, splitting time between designated hitter and third base.
Also earning All-Conference honors is Stevenson who is tied for the league lead in victories with nine. The nine victories was a new-career high for Stevenson, who recorded seven in his freshman campaign, and battled through an injury-plagued sophomore season, and recorded two. Stevenson (New Glasgow, PEI) also pitched a career-high 86 2/3 innings, fanning 63 batters this season. He completed the regular season with a 3.74 ERA, and has limited opposing batters to a .248 mark.
Also honored for their academic achievement during the awards ceremony were 10 Golden Griffin student athletes. Nick Capitano (Bolton, Ont.), John Conti, Jared Kennedy (Calgary, Alta.), Andrew Kneussle, William Krull, Joseph Preziuso, Josh Shepley (Windsor, Ont.), Zachary Sloan (Brampton, Ont.), Ryan Stekl and Stevenson all were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for their prowess in the classroom.
