WMBL Championship Series

Game 1: Edmonton 7 at Swift Current 13

The Swift Current 57’s turned a four-run second inning into an 13-7 rout of the Edmonton Prospects in Game 1 of the WMBL Championship series. The 57’s hammered out 18 hits while Edmonton had 11. One of the key differences in the game was the Prospects' defence committed five errors.

The 57’s chased Edmonton starter Erik Sabrowski from the game after just three innings. The reigning WMBL Pitcher of the Week gave up five runs on six hits and a walk before leaving the game. Brandon Hill, Scot Kramers and Brett Higgins all saw action in relief for Edmonton.

Swift Current sent the senior from the University of Texas, Matt Michalski, to start Game 1. Michalski pitched seven solid innings of five-hit baseball allowing just one run to earn the win. The Mansfield, Texas native turned the ball over to the bullpen after facing 30 Prospect batters. Trey Taylor came out and allowed Edmonton to close the gap as he surrendered five runs on four hits in just 1/3 of inning. James Smith was up next and wrapped up the game throwing 1 2/3 innings.

Riley Campbell had four hits including two home runs and three RBI to pace the Swift Current offence. Brett Esau also had a pair of home runs on his way to a three-hit, three-run and three-RBI evening. Not to be out done, Bodie Cooper chipped in with a three-hit, four-RBI performance.

Edmonton’s offence was supplied by Nick Spillman who led the Prospects with three hits, a run and a RBI. Right fielder Jake Lanferman has a pair of hits including a home run and three RBI in the Prospects losing effort.

Game 2 is set for Monday at Mitchell Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
